Happy Birthday, Dominique Dawes!
|Dominique Dawes was one of the leaders of the Magnificent Seven, which also included Shannon Miller, Jaycie Phelps, Dominique Moceanu, Amanda Borden, Amy Chow and Kerri Strug.|
Happy birthday to Dominique Dawes, who turns 37 today. The owner of four Olympic medals, Dawes became the first African-American to win an Olympic individual medal in gymnastics (she won bronze in the floor exercise at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta) and the first black athlete of any nationality to win an Olympic gold in the sport as part of the storied 1996 Magnificent Seven. The trailblazer also can claim to be just one of three female American gymnasts to compete in three different Olympics (1992, 1996, 2000). Since retiring after the Sydney Games, Dawes graduated from the University of Maryland in 2002 and has since served as the President of the Women’s Sports Foundation and been the co-chair of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.
