Catriona Le May Doan
After striking gold in Nagano and Salt Lake City, Catriona Le May Doan was selected to carry the torch at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Happy birthday, Catriona Le May Doan! The first woman speedskater to break the 38-second barrier in the 500 meters turns 43 today. The 500-meter gold medalist at both the 1998 Nagano Olympics and 2002 Salt Lake City Games was nicknamed “the fastest woman on ice” after her back-to-back victories. The Saskatchewan native also won five world championship titles during her career and was named Canada’s Athlete of the Year in 2002. Le May Doan retired from speedskating in 2003 and has since worked as an Olympic commentator for the CBC and CTV. She was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and was selected to light the interior cauldron during the 2010 opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Games. She lives in Calgary with her husband and their two children.
