We’re celebrating Amelia Earhart Day by saluting some of the highest-flying women in track and field today. American Jenn Suhr struck gold in London in the pole vault when she cleared 15 feet, 7 inches (4.75 meters). The world record is 5.06 meters, which was set in 2009 by London bronze medalist Yelena Isinbayeva. Russia’s Anna Chicherova won gold in the high jump in London when she cleared 6 feet, 8¾ inches. American Brigetta Barrett took home the silver. As for distance, American Brittney Reese traveled 23 feet, 4 1/2 inches to win gold in the long jump in London. Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan won gold in the triple jump at 49.15 feet.
