Twenty years ago today, Jim Valvano -- affectionately known as Jimmy V -- passed away at the age of 47 after a yearlong battle with bone cancer. Eight weeks prior, the former North Carolina State basketball coach (who led his team to the 1983 national title on a buzzer-beater) accepted the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the first annual ESPYS. During his speech, he announced the establishment of The V Foundation for cancer research, which has since raised more than $100 million. His famous words then, also the foundation's motto now, continue to ring true: "Don't give up ... don't ever give up."
