Darren Helm gets 5-year deal to stay in Detroit

DETROIT -- With just a couple hours to go before free agency opened up, the Detroit Red Wings got a deal done Friday with center Darren Helm.

The 29-year-old forward signed a five-year deal worth $3.85 million per season to stay in Detroit, according to a league source.

With speed a priority for teams this offseason after the blazing fast Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup, Helm was going to be a popular target if he reached the market as one of the best skaters in unrestricted free agency.

Helm is best served in the bottom six forward group and had 13 goals and 26 points in 77 games last season for Detroit.
