Best and worst of Ted Thompson's drafts: Running backs

4/17/2015

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Ted Thompson has picked 96 players in the 10 drafts he has run as general manager of the Green Bay Packers. Like any personnel man who makes the final call, there have been hits and misses.

Leading up to the start of the draft on April 30, we will examine Thompson's best and worst picks at each position group.

The first installment was quarterbacks.

Next up, running backs.

Total players drafted: Eight -- DeShawn Wynn, Korey Hall (fullback) Brandon Jackson, Quinn Johnson (fullback), James Starks, Alex Green, Johnathan Franklin, Eddie Lacy.

Best pick: Lacy

Rushed for 1,100-plus yards in each of his first two seasons. Was named the NFL's offensive rookie of the year in 2013 after the Packers took him in the second round (No. 61 overall). His 24 touchdowns (20 rushing, four receiving) are the most by a Packers player in his first two NFL seasons and his 2,317 yards rushing also are the most by a Packers player in his first two years in the league.

Honorable mention: Starks (sixth round, 2010)

Worst pick: Jackson

Picked in almost the identical spot in the second round as Lacy, Jackson (No. 63 overall in 2007) had just one season (2010) in which he was the team's primary back and even then, by the end of the season he had given way to Starks, who became the go-to back in the playoffs and Super Bowl XLV. In his four-year Packers career, Jackson rushed for better than 300 yards in a season only once and finished with a career rushing average of just 3.8 yards per carry.

Dishonorable mention: Green (third round, 2011).

Notes: Starks is the only running back selected by Thompson who has received a second contract with the Packers. He signed a two-year, $3.1 million deal last March. ... Green blew out his knee as a rookie but returned in 2012 to play in 12 games (including four starts). That season, he rushed for 464 yards on 135 carries, a 3.4-yard average, then was released in training camp of 2013. He went on to play that season for the New York Jets but carried only 11 times for 35 yards. … Franklin (fourth round, 2013) saw his career end after just one year because of a neck injury late in his rookie season. … Johnson (fifth round, 2009) played two seasons in Green Bay, then was traded to the Tennessee Titans in 2011 for a conditional draft pick that the Packers never collected because Johnson only appeared in four games that season.
