Starter Pack: A R-E-L-A-X-E-D group

1/15/2015

A roundup of what's happening on the Green Bay Packers beat.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The word still hangs over the Packers' locker room, quite literally. A statuette of the word R-E-L-A-X sits in the equipment room just a few feet from quarterback Aaron Rodgers' locker.

Four months after Rodgers uttered those five letters on his ESPN Milwaukee radio show, that feeling continues to permeate through the Packers.

How else to explain why this team has seemed so loose this week with so much on the line in this Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Seattle Seahawks?

"We just have the right kind of guys; we have the right kind of leaders," said backup quarterback Matt Flynn, when asked how this team can seemingly be so calm. "If you all wouldn't have known it was the NFC championship -- I know you all know it is -- you would think nothing's really different around here. Guys are acting the same. It's just one of those things where we realize that it's a big game, but we play big games every week. Last week was just as big as this week."

Mike McCarthy set the tone with a news conference on Monday that featured the coach in good humor, so much so that it came up again on Wednesday.

"Well, I apologize for being loose Monday," McCarthy joked. "I was feeling pretty good about Sunday still."

Perhaps the only difference about this week was that Rodgers had to do his Wednesday session with reporters in the media auditorium instead of at his locker, which he prefers.

"Just keep doing the same thing you're doing," Rodgers said. "There is more attention, so it gives some other guys who might not get the media opportunities some chances to have some people at their locker. There's a lot of great personalities in the locker room. I would advise to get out there and interview the people who don't get a lot of opportunities. I'm sure they've got some interesting things to say. They've been saving up all year for you guys."
