Each week, we'll take an in-depth look at our preseason All-State basketball team and let you know how a few of those athletes are faring as the season progresses. We'll feature a Prime-Time player (PTP), an Other Top Player (OTP) and an under the radar star who is making a bid to be one of the state's top players (UTR).
If you've got athletes you think we should mention in our All-State Stock Watch, hit me up on Twitter @CParishESPNHS.
PTP: Camyn Boone, Mesa Mountain View, Senior
Boone earned Stock Watch honors in our first post of the hoops season for his outstanding play despite his team's slow start. Now that his team is back on track, Boone deserves even more credit. The Toros have won six in a row and Boone has been a big reason for the resurgence. Against a tough Marcos de Niza squad, Boone scored 25 points to lead his team to a 71-63 win on Tuesday.
OTP: Sami Bzai, Mesquite, Senior
Mesquite is currently hovering over .500 at 12-10 thanks in large part to Bzai's impressive performance night after night. He's averaging 21.7 points per game, and he dropped 25 points on Tuesday despite a loss to a very good Corona del Sol team. Bzai's season-high came in a 29-point effort against Dobson on Jan. 13.
UTR: Jesse Arias, Douglas, Senior
You sort of got the feeling that Arias was going to have a special year when he dropped 48 in his team's first game this season. Sure enough, the senior guard has been a scoring machine. Lower classification or not, he's been on a tear, averaging 27.4 points per game. And the 48 in his team's season-opener wasn't even his most impressive game. He's also had a 51-point scoring night. Thanks to Arias' impressive play, Douglas sports a 15-6 record.
