The Bernie Montoya show: Arizona's cross country preview

8/25/2011

Dyestat's Marc Bloom put together an impressive rundown of the cross country outlook in all 50 states, and it looks like it's going to be an impressive year in Arizona. Here's their breakdown of the state's XC scene:

"There’s no one to match last season’s super-star, the record-breaking, 4:05.29/8:48.63 track runner (and T.S. Eliot-quoting) Billy Orman, now at Harvard. But Bernie Montoya is working on it. The Cibola junior won state Div I by 16 seconds as a soph (Orman was in D-III), and Montoya may have less opposition this time around.

While it’s not a very deep season for individuals, the Desert Vista team is strong, balanced—and deep—with ten sub-10:00 3200 runners (led by 6 juniors and a soph). The Thunder are favored to move up from 3rd and collect their 5th state crown. Junior Carter Macy leads the team."
