This week ESPNHS goes into the Dugout Forum and picks a question to answer on the baseball blog. This week’s question comes from dgia23 and it has to deal with training. We will continue to pick out questions weekly and answer them throughout the year.
There are many different answers to this question and it is completely up to you.
First, there are some players who play another sport, whether it is a fall or winter sport and that helps keep them in shape. Playing another sport can help your overall athletic skills and you can break the monotony of only one sport on a year round basis. Plus, you are in high school and baseball is not a “job” as of yet. If you have an opportunity to play another sport do so, it can help.
Second, if you are just going to focus on baseball typically you will play through the fall. It is in this time that you would be working out and working on your skills. The more reps you get the better off you will be. Plus, you are hitting the weight room and working on your conditioning which will help in the upcoming season as well. Also, the weather in your area will effect what you can and cannot do.
The short answer to your question is that it is up to the player. Baseball is not a year round sport and while some players may “shut it down” from October to November other players don’t. Even if you take a break from the on field stuff during this time you should still work on getting stronger and staying in tip/top shape. If a player can, he will usually start in January getting ready for the upcoming season.
There is no right or wrong answer to this question is completely up to you and what you want to do.
