The Scottsdale Blackhawks know the phrase “close but no cigar.” They know it all too well. Last year, the Blackhawks were one win away from winning the National League and earning a berth in the US Youth Soccer National Championships, but they dropped the final game of the season to FC Dallas and fell to third. Then, in the Region IV tournament, after a dominating group performance, it lost to La Roca Premier in the quarterfinals.

But this year, coach Adam Burke says they weren’t going to let that happen again.

As defending Regional and National Champions, the Fullerton Rangers know that everyone is watching them. They know they’re the team to beat, they know that expectations are high, and they know they’re defending a title.

“But by no means to we feel like we’re favorites,” says coach Jimmy Obleda.

Fullerton won last year’s Region IV crown after going a perfect 6-0, scoring 22 goals and allowing just three. Then at nationals, they scored 10 goals in four games and didn’t allow a single point against them. Needless to say, the expectations are high this year.

In a move long anticipated, US Soccer announced Friday that it will adopt a 10-month schedule starting next fall. US Soccer claims it received "overwhelming support from the Development Academy membership" for a season that will run from September through June or July of the following year. The move will prevent Academy players from representing their high school teams starting next school year, which was a source of debate and concern at the National Soccer Coaches Assocation of America Convention held last month. US Soccer prepared this list of frequently asked questions to explain the transition.

Unlike college football programs, which will pretty much complete their signing classes in one blockbuster day, college soccer has more of a trickle effect -- some now, some later. Therefore, it’s a bit premature to rate classes before they have been finalized, especially since the addition of transfers and/or international players can drastically change the perception of a class. That said, there are a few potential signing classes that appear considerably strong, and to no surprise it’s dominated by ACC programs.

California leads the way in verbal commits

It’s no surprise that California leads the way in total number of high school seniors verbally committed to NCAA Division I programs. However, this year, New York and Texas currently are in the No. 2 and 3 positions, a significant improvement over last year’s finish for each state.

New York finished No. 5 in 2011. Texas was No. 8.

Virginia currently is No. 4, followed by New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. Illinois and Maryland are tied for ninth. With less than two months until the NCAA Signing Period for soccer, expect plenty of movement among the states, since they remain closely grouped together. In fact, only nine commitments separate co-No. 9s Illinois and Maryland from No. 18 Wisconsin.
