The Scottsdale Blackhawks know the phrase “close but no cigar.” They know it all too well. Last year, the Blackhawks were one win away from winning the National League and earning a berth in the US Youth Soccer National Championships, but they dropped the final game of the season to FC Dallas and fell to third. Then, in the Region IV tournament, after a dominating group performance, it lost to La Roca Premier in the quarterfinals.

But this year, coach Adam Burke says they weren’t going to let that happen again.

As defending Regional and National Champions, the Fullerton Rangers know that everyone is watching them. They know they’re the team to beat, they know that expectations are high, and they know they’re defending a title.

“But by no means to we feel like we’re favorites,” says coach Jimmy Obleda.

Fullerton won last year’s Region IV crown after going a perfect 6-0, scoring 22 goals and allowing just three. Then at nationals, they scored 10 goals in four games and didn’t allow a single point against them. Needless to say, the expectations are high this year.

Soccer Rewind: Last week's top stories

April, 9, 2012
4/09/12
7:07
PM ET
ESPNHS takes a look back at the top storylines from last week, which included the top three Texas teams making early playoff exits and a post-match brawl that put two players in a hospital.

5. Revolving Door: Lehi (Utah) lost to league rival Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) 2-1 last week, bringing to an end the last undefeated record among the state's Class 5A and 4A programs – and it’s only midseason. Lehi was 8-0 entering the match. However, Kaden Killpack’s overtime goal lifted Lone Peak to the win. There are 24 Class 5A and 26 Class 4A programs in Utah, and every one of them has at least one loss. The only undefeated teams in the entire state are Class 3A Wasatch (Heber, Utah) and Class 2A Wasatch Academy (Mount Pleasant, Utah).

4. Climbing The Ladder: A 3-0 win by Creighton Prep (Omaha, Neb.) over Omaha South (Omaha, Neb.) hardly seemed noteworthy except for the fact it ran the program’s win streak to 31 matches. The win moved Creighton Prep past an active 30-match win streak by Carroll (Dayton, Ohio) and into a third-place tie among the longest active win streaks. The only longer active win streaks are owned by DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) at 44 and St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark, N.J.) at 36. Jefferson Forest (Forest, Va.) also owns a 31-match win streak. Creighton Prep does not play enough games to catch DeMatha’s streak this season.

3. Battle Royal: Davidson signee Valeriy Sviderkiy scored a pair of second-half goals as POWERADE FAB 50 No. 28 Mills Godwin (Richmond, Va.) upended No. 4 Deep Run (Glen Allen, Va.) in a battle of undefeated Richmond-area powers last week. The result will flip the team’s order in this week’s rankings and put Mills Godwin among the area favorites with Cosby (Midlothian, Va.).

2. Wiped Out: Winter POWERADE FAB 50 No. 3 Berkner (Richardson, Texas), No. 4 Coppell (Texas) and No. 5 Alief Elsik (Houston) were all eliminated in the first two rounds of the Texas Class 5A playoffs. The rash of upsets leaves this week’s Texas state rankings with a brand new look, favoring the programs that are still alive and can win the state title.

1. Getting Physical: Two Victoria East (Victoria, Texas) players ended up in the hospital following a fight at the end of the team’s playoff soccer match against Harlandale (Texas), according to a report in the Victoria Advocate. The initial report stated the fight was instigated by Harlandale players and three players ended up in the hospital. A local television station confirmed only two players were taken to the hospital along with additional news and photos of the incident.
