Each week during the high school season, ESPNHS highlights five weekend matches that have a compelling storyline or could have significant state, region and/or national implications.
This week, a league showdown in New Orleans between a pair of teams ranked among the top 20 in the POWERADE FAB 50 highlights the schedule.
Friday, Jan. 27
No. 4 Dobie (Pasadena, Texas) vs. Carroll (Southlake, Texas): The Round Rock tournament features a number of intriguing matches this weekend, but perhaps none bigger than Pasadena Dobie taking on defending state champion Southlake Carroll. Dobie will need to go 4-0 at this event to remain in the national championship running. Perhaps a 3-0-1 showing will be enough to stay in the top five.
No. 24 Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) vs. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.): For the second straight week, Servite has a national game to watch, this time when it takes on former CIF-Southern Section power JSerra in a Trinity League match. A win by Servite will eliminate JSerra from league title contention and turn the race for No. 1 into a two-team battle with Servite and Santa Margarita. However, JSerra could make major strides in securing a section playoff bid with a victory.
Friday, Jan. 27-Saturday, Jan. 28
Marcus Cup in Flower Mound, Texas: No. 20 Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) highlights the field at its own Marcus Cup event this weekend. Marcus will need a perfect showing in order to climb in next week’s POWERADE FAB 50.
Saturday, Jan. 28
No. 16 Jesuit (New Orleans, La.) vs. No. 18 Brother Martin (New Orleans, La.): Take away the two meetings already between these programs and the teams are a combined 39-1-4 this year. Jesuit and Brother Martin split their earlier meetings, with Brother Martin winning on penalty kicks and Jesuit responding with a 3-0 victory a few weeks later. The winner here enters the Division I playoffs as the state favorite.
No. 47 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) vs. Richmond (Calif.): De La Salle’s recent win streak earned this perennially ranked program a return visit in the POWERADE FAB 50. Now, a challenging week of matches ends with a non-league clash against a recently ranked team in Richmond.
