Palmetto Cup showcases six FAB 50 teams

4/11/2012

Sure it’s a South Carolina-based event with only one out-of-state participant, but that has not prevented the Palmetto Cup from becoming one of the most important spring high school events in the country.

EVENT DETAILS: The 20th annual Palmetto Cup in Cayce, S.C., features 10 teams from two states. Six teams are currently in the POWERADE FAB 50. Matches start April 11 and each team plays four matches in four days. The top two teams at the end of the four-team round-robin session meet for the championship on April 14.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: POWERADE FAB 50 No. 1 Irmo (Columbia, S.C.) is participating in the event for the first time ever. This program will need a Palmetto Cup title this year to retain its No. 1 ranking. Meanwhile, No. 5 Cardinal Newman (Columbia, S.C.) or No. 18 Norman North (Norman, Okla.) could play themselves into the national title chase with a Palmetto Cup title. Norman North, interestingly, has three Palmetto Cup titles since 2000 – the only school to ever win three titles at the event. However, it must forfeit its first match this year in order comply with Oklahoma state rules regarding the number of tournament matches allowed and cannot participate in the title contest. This tournament also gives teams such as host Brookland-Cayce (Cayce, S.C.) and Christ Church (Greenville, S.C.) an opportunity to win their way into the national rankings. Meanwhile, Wando (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), a preseason national favorite that sustained a pair of early losses, can regain some ground in the national rankings with a strong showing at the event.
