MAST: Montverde tops Delray for title

Charlie Anagho, Alex Anyeagbunam and Henrique Novaes each scored goals to carry Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) to a 3-1 victory over American Heritage-Delray (Delray Beach, Fla.) in the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament final Saturday night.

Brian James scored for American Heritage-Delray.

The tournament featured three POWERADE FAB 50 teams, with the teams finishing in the order that they were ranked: No. 5 Montverde Academy winning the event, No. 7 American Heritage-Delray placing second and No. 11 Brophy College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) winning the third-place match over Gulfport (Miss.) 2-1.

POWERADE FAB 50 No. 7 American Heritage-Delray set up an all-Florida final at the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament with a shootout win over No. 11 Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.).

Delray will face Montverde Academy in the final. Montverde Academy defeated Gulfport (Miss.) by the mercy rule at 8-0 with 15 minutes left in the match.

Brophy College Prep (Phonix, Ariz.) and American Heritage-Delray (Delray Beach, Fla.) won their opening matches Thursday at the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament, setting up a Friday clash of these POWERADE FAB 50 nationally ranked programs. On the other side of the tournament draw, Gulfport (Miss.) and Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) advanced.

American Heritage-Delray defeated Auburndale (Fla.) 2-0 to start the day, and Brophy followed with a 5-0 win over a shorthanded Bolles School (Jacksonville, Fla.), which brought only 11 players to the event due to the school's exam schedule. Gulfport upended Tampa Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) 2-1 and host Montverde Academy defeated West Shore (Melbourne, Fla.) 4-0.

It didn’t take long for the honor of being No. 1 to shift in the Winter POWERADE FAB 50.

Preseason No. 1 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) lost a star player due to an ACL injury and then tied a pair of early season matches. No. 2 Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to fellow FAB 50-ranked Chaparral on Thursday.
