Iloski comes up big as Surf surges to first

November, 30, 2011
Marcos RamirezGabriel Ramirez/ESPNHSMarcos Ramirez is part of a balanced San Diego Surf attack that has resulted in a first-place showing this season.
Players on the Crossfire Premier squad underestimated San Diego Surf attacking forward-midfielder Brian Iloski.

And the little guy made them pay by setting up two goals in the Surf's 3-2 come-from-behind victory in a U.S. Soccer Development Academy under-15/16 match in October.

"That's what happened when we were up there in Seattle recently when this team was calling him Justin Beiber, asking him, 'How old are you, 10?,'" recalls coach Anthony Bruce, an assistant with the Surf's under-15/16 squad. "But they found out soon enough that Brian's this great little player who is very, very tricky on the ball. He's just a little guy who sets up all of the goals."

Iloski is among the keys to a recent surge by the San Diego Surf, who are 4-2-1 and in first place in the SoCal Division of the West Conference on total points, but trailing Real Salt Lake-AZ in point-per-game average. The Surf is 7-4-2 overall, heading into this weekend's Development Academy Winter Showcase in Sarasota, Fla.
