Folsom QB did not tie national record

August, 26, 2012

PM ET
Founder of National Federation record book has listing of player with 15 TD passes for one game.

It’s getting to be an all-too-familiar pattern. Player puts up huge statistical totals. Reporters everywhere go nuts, most of the time citing state records (and most of the time without crediting the source of those records, which is Cal-Hi Sports) and most of the time there is incorrect information.

It’s not even September yet and it’s happened again, this time in the case of Folsom sophomore quarterback Jake Browning. Following David Graves, Dano Graves and Tanner Trosin, Browning is apparently the latest in a string of Folsom quarterbacks who is going to put up prolific stats.

In a 66-28 victory over Woodcreek of Roseville on Friday night, Browning completed 34 of 51 passes for 689 yards and 10 touchdowns. Since he’s a sophomore and based on the system he is in, barring injury Browning could be on his way to throwing for 15,000 yards or more in the next three years.

California high school girls basketballHarold Abend/ESPNHSThe Cal Sparks Gold team shined in more than one tourney in the summer of 2012.
Cal Sparks Gold team completes strong season by winning Summer in the City event. Girls from St. Mary’s of Stockton also shine in different event.

Note: See Part 1 of this story that took a look at the Next Level All-American Camp on July 6-7 in San Diego, the Next Level Nationals on July 8-10 in San Diego and for two national events near Nashville, Tenn.

Halfway through the NCAA-mandated week-long “dark period” of basketball recruiting when Division I college coaches can’t observe players or events, the Girls of Summer basketball caravan provided the eyes and ears for those coaches at the July 19-22 San Diego Classic.

Of the overall 200 teams competing, 40 were in the 3A Division that was observed.

Despite playing without 2013 stars Courtney Range and Onome Jemerigbe, St. Mary’s (Stockton) won it’s first-ever 3A title with an exciting 48-47 win over a Central Catholic of Portland (Ore.) team that was at full strength with All-American candidates Kailee Johnson and Jordan Reynolds both playing.

Annual caravan conducted by Cal-Hi Sports correspondent observes top California talent plus nation’s best in girls basketball.

What started out in 2005 with a trip to the Nike Elite Skills Academy in Beaverton, Ore., to evaluate invitees that year that included current USA Olympian Maya Moore has now come full circle.

With almost 5,000 miles in the air and 3,000 miles behind the windshield, the Girls of Summer Basketball caravan had its biggest summer ever. The tour was sponsored this year by the Next Level Sports Service and Hoops4Girls (a 501C-3) after being sponsored for six years by Cal-Hi Sports.

The eight events covered from July 6 through the end of the month concluded at the Summer in the City Elite Division title games on July 31 in the Bay Area.

The caravan began the viewing period at the July 6-7 Next Level All-American Camp at San Diego City College.

Logan crashes No. 1 softball party

Seventh inning is the difference as the Colts avenge their only loss by upsetting unbeaten Amador Valley to win CIF North Coast Section Division I title. State No. 1 ranking to be decided Saturday.

Although Amador Valley of Pleasanton sophomore standout Johanna Grauer was mowing down hitters and her teammates were getting consistent contact in their at-bats, Friday’s CIF North Coast Section Division I softball final between the Dons and James Logan of Union City had that familiar feeling of so many softball games when so much is on the line.

The underdog team, which in this case was Logan, hangs around and then one or two plays happen that decides the outcome.

Sac-Joaquin football gains strength

PM ET
California high school footballMark Tennis/ESPNHSGranite Bay's Johnny Cooley (with dad, Robert) had one of top SPARQ ratings at 2012 Nike combine in Oakland.
From the Nike events of last weekend, it’s obvious that rebuilding seasons are becoming extinct for top programs in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section. Lincoln of Stockton may have early edge in 2012 for the Cal-Hi Sports preseason state rankings with its running back-quarterback combo, but defending champs in Division I, II and III have impressive players, too.

After watching the Division I and Division II championship games last December in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section and noticing all of the seniors leading squads at Granite Bay, Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove, Vacaville and Folsom, you’d think that those teams are going to drastically fall off in 2012.

You’d be thinking incorrectly. The section has emerged as a genuine hot spot in the state in the last five to six years and at last weekend’s Nike-based football events in the Bay Area all of the top teams from the section showcased players who look like they’ll be able to step up this fall.

Dons roll past Mitty and Livermore to win Livermore Stampede and will now close in on being No. 1 in the state after top-ranked Norco falls at Michelle Carew Classic.

After her performance in the 18th Annual Livermore Stampede, there’s a new queen of Northern California high school softball and her name is Johanna Grauer from Amador Valley of Pleasanton.

The championship game of the Stampede was played at 7:15 p.m. last Saturday, but to softball aficionados and for rankings purposes, the 3 p.m. semifinal between Cal-Hi Sports No. 3 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) and No. 7 Amador Valley was the game of the day.

We use these as the basis for updating the state record book, which has been published seven times, most recently in the spring of 2009. To report a state stat star of your own, please email highlights to Mark.Tennis@espn.com.

Valerie Aguilar (Montebello)
She puts her name into the state record book by collecting three triples in a 7-3 victory last Saturday over Garfield of Los Angeles. Aguilar also went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple last Saturday in a different game as the Oilers beat Bellflower 15-6. Earlier in the week, Aguilar also had a 4-for-4 outing against San Gabriel. Teammate April Marquez also will get her name into the state record book due to a performance from earlier in the season when she ripped four doubles in a game against El Rancho of Pico Rivera.

The 2010 title came in Division II with the last two in the state’s big school division.
