Cal-Hi Sports Top 25 Weekend Scoreboard
Check here to see which teams may be going up, which ones going down in next week’s state rankings, the 13th of the 2011 season.
Upset of the Year: That would have to be the one turned in on Friday night when Tesoro of Rancho Santa Margarita (we’ll finally stop calling the Titans from Las Flores) knocked out two-time defending champ Servite of Anaheim from the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs with a 24-20 triumph. Servite was No. 2 in the state and No. 21 in the POWERADE FAB 50 for the nation. We have linked the ESPNLA story by Martin Henderson off of our main ESPNHS Cal-Hi Sports page.
Servite’s loss creates a clear path for state No. 3 Westlake of Westlake Village to earn a bid into the CIF Open Division state final (probably opposite De La Salle). It also creates a different race for Southern California’s berth into the CIF Division I state bowl game. The winner of the CIFSS Inland Division probably has the best chance, but if that winner is Vista Murrieta (which has five forfeit losses) then the spot could go to the CIFSS Pac-5 champ (three of the four semifinalists have multiple losses) or to the CIF Central Section champ (if it’s Bakersfield and the Drillers are 14-0).
Hail to the section champs: This week’s state scoreboard also serves as a salute to three teams that have already won section titles over the long Thanksgiving weekend.
In the San Francisco Section, Mission won its first title since 1954 with a 12-7 victory over Washington in the traditional San Francisco title game played on Thanksgiving morning at Kezar Stadium. The Bears (9-3) avenged an earlier 28-7 loss to the Eagles by holding them to three first downs. The winning touchdown came on a 17-yard run by junior Antoine Porter in the fourth quarter.
In the Northern Section, Paradise beat Foothill of Palo Cedro in the Division I championship for the second straight year and this time it was an even easier 40-7 win for the Bobcats, who hosted the game Wednesday night. Running back Albert Stevens powered Paradise (11-1) with 42 carries for 280 yards and three touchdowns.
In the Oakland Section, McClymonds captured its second straight championship with a 33-19 victory against Skyline. The Warriors (10-2) were led by running back Harold Halcomb, who had 161 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Mack quarterback Eddie Heard Jr., who also is one of the top baseball prospects in Northern California, scored on a 2-yard run and had a key interception on defense.
