Thompson rushes for NorCal records

By By Harold Abend

The house was packed on last Friday night at Santa Rosa High, and despite his team falling 28-20 to Windsor (Calif.) in the CIF North Coast Section Division II title game, Concord (Concord, Calif.) running back Olito Thompson didn’t disappoint with three Northern California rushing records.

His performance gets him where no other San Francisco Bay Area running back has gone in terms of numbers.

Thompson’s carry at 6:08 of the first quarter got him past Jahvid Best from Salesian (Richmond, Calif.) as the all-time leading rusher in the Metro Bay Area. In 2006, Best ran for 3,225 yards at Salesian.

When the 5-foot-10, 200-pound junior gained seven yards off right tackle late in the third quarter, he passed John Bordenkircher (3,416 yards in 1997 at Dixon) as the single-season leading rusher in Northern California history according to the ESPNHS Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book.

In the end, Thompson carried a whopping 54 times for 285 yards and one touchdown. The 54 carries is also a Northern California record according to the record book and ties him with several others high up on the list as well.

Thompson finished the season with 3,488 yards and 35 touchdowns. Besides the No. 1 spot in Northern California, the yardage gets Thompson the state’s No. 4 spot all-time in the record book’s most yards for a season list. His 408 carries is also a NorCal record.

“Whoa, really, all those records, that’s amazing,” Thompson told Cal-Hi Sports.

“During the season, he’s gone from a power runner to a single-cut downhill runner with improvement every game," said Concord coach Brian Hamilton.

It will be hard to duplicate what he did this year, but Thompson can break the Best’s NorCal career record of 6,379 yards with 2,648 next season. And with as many times as Thompson is willing to carry the ball, anything seems possible.

Here are updated Cal-Hi Sports state record totals where Thompson is now included:
