California high school baseballScott Kurtz/ESPNHSRyan 'Rowdy" Tellez is a slugging star for Elk Grove.
First group of honorees for the 2012 Cal-Hi Sports all-state baseball teams is for non-seniors. We have a first team of 30 players and a second team of 20 more.

State Team of the Year Vista and Division II State Team of the Year Campolindo of Moraga might be very good again next season if selections to the 2012 Cal-Hi Sports all-state baseball underclass teams are a barometer.

Both Vista and Campolindo landed three players each among the 50 who were either named first team or second team. Other schools to collect more than one player chosen are Elk Grove, El Toro, Harvard-Westlake, Rancho Bernardo and Willow Glen.

Here are the 2012 Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Underclass Teams:

Vista, Norco nab State Team of Year honors

A 1-0 win by Vista in Monday’s CIF San Diego Section D1 final is just barely enough to give the Panthers the nod for baseball over Cathedral Catholic. Norco, meanwhile, makes it official for softball.

It was just a formality for the Norco softball team to be selected Tuesday as the ESPNHS Cal-Hi Sports 2012 State Team of the Year. The Cougars, after all, were No. 1 in last week’s overall top 20 and capped their season by winning the CIF Southern Section Division I title last Saturday in Irvine.

A formality couldn’t be further from the truth in baseball. Selecting a State Team of the Year was more like a case of peering into a microscope to study nearly identical particles.

It's back-to-back no-hitters for duo from St. Bernard of Eureka. This week's best also includes a six-hit game by San Diego Clairemont's Luke Jarvis in which he also hit for the cycle plus a clutch homer by Jack Stinn of S.F. St. Ignatius that will shake up the next state rankings.

Note: We’re proud once again to collect weekly writeups of the most significant individual high school baseball totals in California. We use these as the basis for updating the state record book, which has been published seven times, most recently in the spring of 2009. To report a state stat star of your own, please email highlights to Mark.Tennis@espn.com.

Josh Allen (Firebaugh)
It wasn’t a typo that Firebaugh defeated Avenal 42-0 in a baseball game last week. Allen went 5-for-6 at the plate in that game with five RBIs and also pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Teammate Juan Garcia also had a career day at the plate as he scored six times and had eight RBIs.

We have two weeks full of baseball players to catch up on, including a double no-hitter and a 48-game win streak coming to a close. From this week, a sophomore from Los Alamitos also has cooled off the hot start of state-ranked Huntington Beach.

Angel Acosta (Gabrielino, San Gabriel)
The junior pitcher already has well over 300 strikeouts for his career since he was a varsity standout two years ago as a freshman. In a 2-1 win earlier this week against Mountain View of El Monte, Acosta went eight innings with a two-hitter and struck out nine. It was not his top extra-inning effort of the season, either. Acosta struck out 18 in a nine-inning game to lead Gabrielo past El Monte, 3-2, one week ago. He also had a two-hitter in that one.
