High-SchoolCalifornia: Cal-Hi Sports state top 20

Clovis High School, CalHiSportsMark Tennis/ESPNHSDominic Topoozian from Buchanan of Clovis has already notched a big pitching win this season against Clovis West.
Breaking news on Tuesday is that All-American pitcher Lucas Giolito of No. 5 Harvard-Westlake may be lost for the season with an arm injury. New No. 1 is defending CIFSS Div. I champion J.W. North of Riverside.

It took less than an hour for the news of Lucas Giolito’s arm injury to blow up in the Facebook, Twitter and blog world. The senior from Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood was recently ranked as the top right-handed pitching prospect in the nation and combined with lefty Max Fried has had the Wolverines considered to be one of California’s top teams this spring.

It was reported that Giolito will be out six to 10 weeks with the injury, but given his age and what’s at stake it’s hard to see him risking anything to salvage a high school season.

Harvard-Westlake, which began at No. 2 in the state, dropped to No. 5 in this week’s new state top 20. That had more to do with a loss to Valencia than the health of any pitchers. The team’s ranking from here on out also will only be based on what it does on-the-field and not on who is suiting up.

The updated rankings, which are the first of the 2012 regular season, also sees a change at the top due to preseason No. 1 Mater Dei of Santa Ana dropping an 8-1 contest on Monday to Huntington Beach.

The new No. 1 is J.W. North of Riverside, which is the defending CIF Southern Section Division I champion and has opened with wins against Victor Valley of Victorville, Colony of Ontario, Granite Hills of Apple Valley, Redlands East Valley and Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore.
