Final State Division Softball Rankings

June, 13, 2012
California high school softballHarold Abend/ESPNHSBridget Pacchetti and Dani Albini of NCS D3 champion San Marin (Novato).
Cal-Hi Sports’ mythical champs for 2012 are Norco (D1), Archbishop Mitty (D2), Chino Hills (D3), La Canada (D4) and Pomona Catholic (D5).

Being No. 1 in the state in a rankings division in softball is old hat for Archbishop Mitty of San Jose. This year’s top finish statewide in Division II, based mostly on being 27-2 and winning a CIF Central Coast Section Division II title, is the school’s seventh in the last nine years and makes it two in a row.

It also might be getting to be old hat for Pomona Catholic in Division V, which also ends No. 1 for a second straight year.

Here are the final divisional state rankings for the 2012 season (with contributions from Paul Muyskens; through games of Saturday, June 2):

No surprise with Norco sitting at No. 1, but rounding out the final top five are James Logan of Union City, Amador Valley of Pleasanton, Chino Hills and Archbishop Mitty.

Saturday softball: No. 1 Norco wins

June, 3, 2012
After building 6-0 lead, the Cougars hold on to beat Santiago of Corona 6-4 in CIF Southern Section Division I final. Cal-Hi Sports state divisional No. 1 teams Chino Hills and La Canada also win CIFSS titles.

Three years ago, Norco High’s softball team won the CIF Southern Section Division I title with a 32-2 record. That team was No. 3 in the final ESPNHS POWERADE FAB 50 national rankings.

On Saturday night at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine, the Cougars won the same title by topping Santiago of Corona 6-4 and posted an almost-exact 31-2 record. This team, however, is going to be No. 1 in all the rankings.

New State Division Softball Rankings

May, 24, 2012
El Diamante is the first major upset victim, but more could be on the list very quickly. Two divisional state titles also are already down to two possible winners.

This week’s new Cal-Hi Sports divisional state rankings for softball were compiled after games of Wednesday but before the CIF Southern Section quarterfinals played on Thursday.

There are no new No. 1 teams, but on Wednesday highly-regarded El Diamante of Visalia saw its hopes for a second straight CIF Central Section Division I title wrecked with a 7-6 upset loss to Clovis West of Fresno.

Here are the third divisional state rankings for the 2012 season (with contributions from Paul Muyskens; through games of Wednesday, May 15):

New State Division Softball Rankings

May, 18, 2012
There’s at least one new team in every top 10 this week, but none of the newcomers are entering any higher than ninth.

Changes should be fast and furious in the Cal-Hi Sports divisional state softball rankings as the section playoffs get through with the early rounds.

That wasn’t the case this week, though, as nearly all teams didn’t play or had little trouble in regular season finales.

Here are the second divisional state rankings for the 2012 season (with contributions from Paul Muyskens; through games of Tuesday, May 15 and including other results from this week):

New Cal-Hi Sports Softball Top 20

May, 16, 2012
Pacifica drops meaningless game, which does flip-flop No. 1 ranking with Norco but scenario still in place for either Mariners or Cougars to finish as No. 1 team in state and nation.

Norco is back on top in this week’s state top 20 softball rankings, but in the big picture it’s still going to be what happens in the playoffs that determines which team will end up in the No. 1 position.

Although previous No. 1 Pacifica of Garden Grove lost in its regular season finale, both the Mariners and Norco can still end the season at 31-2 with a CIF Southern Section Division I title. Based on strength of schedule, that will be hard to beat not just for any other team in California but for any other team this year in the nation according to the ESPNHS POWERADE FAB 50.

San Diego Section top-ranked Bonita Vista of Chula Vista is the team coming up the most in this week’s rankings. The Barons are up to No. 12 after being at No. 16 last week.

New Cal-Hi Sports Softball Top 20

May, 9, 2012
Pacifica of Garden Grove and Norco still lead the pack as the regular season in many places in the state ends this week.

The first seven positions in this week’s new state softball top 20 remained in place, but there was some scrambling at the bottom.

Tuesday games are not normally taken into account for the weekly rankings, but it was impossible not to check a couple of key scores. That ended up helping Camarillo join the top 20 as a newcomer at No. 19 and also enabled Del Oro of Loomis to stay in at No. 20 despite taking a loss last week to Roseville.

1. (1) Pacifica (Garden Grove) 25-1
The Mariners remain the top team in the state (they also are No. 1 in the POWERADE FAB 50) after an 11-1 road win over Tustin and a 7-2 home win over Western of Anaheim. Nicole DeWitt led the way in the first win of the week as she homered and drove in four runs. Pacifica looks to wrap up an undefeated Empire League championship this week.

New Cal-Hi Sports Softball Top 20

Norco shows how to enhance ranking even when team already is No. 1. This week’s new rankings also sees significant rises for Northern California powers Sheldon and San Benito.

It is possible to strengthen a No. 1 ranking and proof of that is what the Norco softball team did during last week’s Torrance National Tournament.

Coach Rick Robinson’s club rolled to the tourney title and although the lineup of teams wasn’t exactly the same as the Arizona Tournament of Champions, state-ranked Edison of Huntington Beach was there along with Nevada power Damonte Ranch and a sprinkling of other dangerous squads.

Norco improved to 14-0 on Tuesday with a victory over Centennial of Corona. The Cougars not only remained No. 1 in the state, but are likely going to be lifted to No. 1 in this week’s POWERADE FAB 50 national rankings on the ESPNHS softball page on Thursday.

At this point, even if Norco were to drop a game in the ultra-tough Big VIII League, the Cougars would still be hard to drop from the No. 1 state ranking.

1. (1) Norco 14-0
Ohio State-bound Ashley Goodwin hit a two-run home run and the Cougars defeated North of Torrance 8-0 in the championship game of the Torrance National Tournament. Emily Lockman dominated in the circle as the Cougars won four of their five games at the tournament without allowing a run.
