There won’t be a Norco-Pacifica showdown in CIF Southern Section finals, but the Cougars are still in line to be State Team of the Year. Amador Valley moves up to the No. 2 position.

One half of the anticipated matchup between No. 1 Norco and No. 2 Pacifica of Garden Grove for the mythical state and national title fizzled last Friday when Pacifica fell in a 4-3 loss to defending champion Santiago of Corona in the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals.

Norco, which is all too familiar with Corona Santiago, still has a chance to be No. 1 in both but has to get to this weekend’s final first with a Tuesday semifinal contest against Vista Murrieta of Murrieta (Tuesday scores are not counted in this week’s rankings).

Pacifica’s loss helps unbeaten Amador Valley of Pleasanton in its attempt to be No. 1 in both, too. If Norco doesn’t win its title and Amador does, then the final No. 1 state and national ranking will be headed to the East Bay.
