High-SchoolCalifornia: James Logan

California high school softballDos Pueblos H.S./ESPNHSDos Pueblos of Goleta pitcher Hannah Harris had sterling prep career.
Since 1985, we’ve been privileged to honor California’s best in softball through multiple all-state teams. There are nearly 200 players on this first look at those that could make it for 2012.

The first step for a player to be among those chosen on one of the Cal-Hi Sports all-state softball teams is to be recognized as a nominee.
The list that follows is only a starting point. If a player is not included, don’t take it personally. We may post an updated nomination list prior to choosing the actual teams and we may continue to add players as they come in.
You can send a nomination with each athlete’s, position, year in school, significant statistics. Comparing a player not on the board yet to one who already is can be very important toward eventual selection. Limit each nomination to one page please. Send to: Mark.Tennis@espn.com or FAX (209) 463-1219 or call (209) 463-9050.
Here are the nominations currently on our board for the various 2012 all-state softball teams:

No surprise with Norco sitting at No. 1, but rounding out the final top five are James Logan of Union City, Amador Valley of Pleasanton, Chino Hills and Archbishop Mitty.

This week’s final top 20 state softball rankings were expanded to 30 teams in all. This gives us the opportunity to write more comments about additional teams and players. Still to come are the final state softball rankings according to our traditional five divisions.

There could be a lot of changes next week, but this week the first 15 teams from last week are the same. Only newcomers are Heritage of Brentwood and Canyon of Anaheim.

The next two weeks of the state top 20 softball rankings are especially tricky because there are so many important games on Tuesdays. Our aim has been to get the new rankings posted at least a few hours before those games are played.

This week’s most important Tuesday game is No. 2 Pacifica of Garden Grove playing No. 8 Royal of Simi Valley in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. That score won’t be included in this week’s top 20, but we’ll have updated info when the next divisional state rankings are compiled.

Pacifica drops meaningless game, which does flip-flop No. 1 ranking with Norco but scenario still in place for either Mariners or Cougars to finish as No. 1 team in state and nation.

Norco is back on top in this week’s state top 20 softball rankings, but in the big picture it’s still going to be what happens in the playoffs that determines which team will end up in the No. 1 position.

Although previous No. 1 Pacifica of Garden Grove lost in its regular season finale, both the Mariners and Norco can still end the season at 31-2 with a CIF Southern Section Division I title. Based on strength of schedule, that will be hard to beat not just for any other team in California but for any other team this year in the nation according to the ESPNHS POWERADE FAB 50.

San Diego Section top-ranked Bonita Vista of Chula Vista is the team coming up the most in this week’s rankings. The Barons are up to No. 12 after being at No. 16 last week.
