New State Division Baseball Rankings

5/17/2012

Biggest changes in the second week of these compilations are in Division II where three new teams, led by Los Altos of the CIF Central Coast Section, get to go in as newcomers. Click here for this week’s top 20 overall baseball rankings.

Section playoffs are yet to start in San Diego and the North Coast, but they are about to end in the Northern Section.

No. 1 teams this week in the Cal-Hi Sports divisional baseball rankings are Lutheran of Orange (D1), Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood (D2), El Capitan of Lakeside (D3), Escalon (D4) and Desert Christian of Lancaster (D5).

Here are the second divisional state rankings for the 2012 season (contributions by Paul Muyskens; previous rank in parentheses; through games of Tuesday, May 7):

DIVISION I

1. (2) Lutheran (Orange) 21-4

2. (1) Mater Dei (Santa Ana) 22-5

Notes: Just like last week, the top 13 teams in this division were all put in the same order as they appeared earlier this week in the overall state top 20….

Changing at the top had to be done to match the seedings in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs as well as all of the local rankings in Southern California. Since both Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei are in those playoffs, the ranking for those teams isn’t too important right now for either team….

DIVISION II

1. (1) Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood) 23-4-1

2. (4) Campolindo (Moraga) 17-4-1

3. (2) Palo Alto 25-6

4. (5) Pacifica (Garden Grove) 23-5

5. (7) Alemany (Mission Hills) 22-6-1

6. (3) Cypress 24-6

7. (9) Granite Bay 20-6

8. (NR) Los Altos 21-8

9. (NR) Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 16-6

10. (NR) Foothill (Palo Cedro) 28-2

Bubble: Bella Vista (Fair Oaks) 20-6, Clovis North (Clovis) 20-10, Dougherty Valley (San Ramon) 18-5, and Rancho Bernardo (San Diego) 19-9.

Notes: Harvard-Westlake is no longer No. 1 overall in the state, but the Wolverines are still on top in this division despite a loss to Loyola of Los Angeles…

Los Altos won 2-of-3 games in a league championship series against Palo Alto. We’ll still rank Paly higher as a defending CCS champ and due to overall record. Los Altos, though, is now state-ranked as well…..

One team that Cardinal Newman has a win against this season is Sunnyslope of Phoenix, Ariz. Sunnyslope just won the Division II state title in Arizona and also is considered Arizona’s top-ranked overall team with a final record of 28-4-1…..

DIVISION III

1. (1) El Capitan (Lakeside) 23-5

2. (2) Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) 25-5

3. (3) Bonita (La Verne) 26-2

4. (4) St. Ignatius (San Francisco) 19-7-1

5. (5) Fresno 25-2

6. (6) Beckman (Irvine) 19-7

7. (7) Oakdale 23-4

8. (8) La Salle (Pasadena) 18-7-1

9. (9) Bishop Amat (La Puente) 19-9

10. (10) Palm Desert 21-8

Bubble: Alhambra 20-3, El Dorado (Placerville) 24-2-1, Garces (Bakersfield) 24-6, Lompoc 19-6, St. Augustine (San Diego) 23-7, Templeton 18-4, University (Irvine) 18-7, Yuba City 21-6.

Notes: St. Ignatius lost a game in the WCAL playoffs, but it was in the final to Serra of San Mateo and earlier in the week the Wildcats beat D1 Valley Christian of San Jose…

DIVISION IV

1. (1) Escalon 23-1-1

2. (2) Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach) 23-5

3. (3) Paraclete (Lancaster) 22-2

4. (4) Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville) 23-4

5. (6) Cathedral (Los Angeles) 21-5

6. (7) Serra (Gardena) 20-4

7. (8) Menlo School (Atherton) 19-7

8. (5) Palma (Salinas) 21-5

9. (9) Capital Christian (Sacramento) 23-3

10. (10) Woodcrest Christian (Riverside) 20-3

Bubble: Bishop Diego (Santa Barbara) 18-3, Kerman 19-9-1, La Jolla Country Day (La Jolla) 19-8, Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 17-6-1, Salesian (Richmond) 17-4-1, St. Mary’s (Berkeley) 19-5.

Notes: Escalon is the top seed in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs. The Cougars’ top challenger may be No. 9 Capital Christian…..

Previous No. 5 Palma was the highest-ranked team to lose as the Chieftains fell in a Tri-County League game to Salinas. That’s another bigger school in a big school league, though, so the rankings drop was kept to a minimum….

DIVISION V

1. (1) Desert Christian (Lancaster) 21-3

2. (2) Bradshaw Christian (Sacramento) 23-4

3. (3) Calvary Christian (Vista) 22-5

4. (4) Capistrano Valley Christian (SJ Capistrano) 19-6

5. (5) Valley Christian (Roseville) 19-6

6. (6) Maxwell 19-7

7. (7) Durham 18-1

8. (10) Webb (Claremont) 20-4

9. (8) Valley Christian (Dublin) 17-4

10. (9) St. Vincent de Paul (Petaluma) 21-3

Bubble: College Prep (Oakland) 11-6, Head-Royce (Oakland) 16-5, Hillcrest Christian (Granada Hills) 15-3, Poly (Pasadena) 16-5, Thomas More (San Jose) 18-4, Woodland Christian 17-3.

Notes: No. 6 Maxwell and No. 7 Durham are both playing in CIF Northern Section title games on Saturday back-to-back at Butte College. Maxwell faces Fall River of McArthur in Division V while Durham meets Willows in Division III. It doesn’t matter much to compare the two because if both win Maxwell has the edge with a head-to-head win….
