Mater Dei’s hopes for No. 1 state and national ranking are dashed by Newbury Park in CIFSS Tuesday upset. Vista, Cathedral Catholic (both from San Diego Section) could be next in line.

The Newbury Park baseball team did a favor for the rest of the state as its big upset of state No. 1 Mater Dei in Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division I semifinals essentially guaranteed that this year’s final No. 1 team in the Cal-Hi Sports rankings is going to come from outside of the Southern Section.

With the CIFSS D1 final on Friday night at Dodger Stadium coming down to the Panthers (20-7) and Corona (19-14), the next teams in line for the state’s highest ranking are both from the San Diego Section.

But that’s a complicated situation as well.

El Diamante is the first major upset victim, but more could be on the list very quickly. Two divisional state titles also are already down to two possible winners.

This week’s new Cal-Hi Sports divisional state rankings for softball were compiled after games of Wednesday but before the CIF Southern Section quarterfinals played on Thursday.

There are no new No. 1 teams, but on Wednesday highly-regarded El Diamante of Visalia saw its hopes for a second straight CIF Central Section Division I title wrecked with a 7-6 upset loss to Clovis West of Fresno.

Here are the third divisional state rankings for the 2012 season (with contributions from Paul Muyskens; through games of Wednesday, May 15):

Pacifica gets the bats sizzling at Michelle Carew Classic and moves up to No. 1 in this week’s state rankings.

After a quiet week of the state top 20 softball rankings, the order at the top had to be re-shuffled after the outcomes of the Michelle Carew Classic in Anaheim Hills and the Livermore Stampede in Livermore.

Previous No. 2 Pacifica of Garden Grove is the new No. 1 after winning the Michelle Carew Classic title. Previous No. 1 Norco lost its first game of the season earlier in the tournament 2-1 to Lutheran of Orange.

Moving up into the No. 2 spot is unbeaten Amador Valley of Pleasanton, which topped previous No. 3 Archbishop Mitty of San Jose in the semifinals and then beat Livermore in the final.

1. (2) Pacifica (Garden Grove) 19-1
The Mariners didn’t avenge their only loss to Norco at the Michelle Carew Classic, but they battered the field that included Norco and are an easy call to replace the Cougars as the state’s No. 1 team. Pacifica won the title with a 13-4 victory over Los Alamitos behind tourney MVP Rebecca Lee and most valuable pitcher Kaylee Carlson. The semifinal win was 7-2 against host Canyon of Anaheim.
