Week Zero recap: Lower classifications rule the day

Football hasn't started yet in Colorado. Well, not really. Zero Week, which showcases a few of the teams before the official start to the season, got underway this past weekend. Here are some of the highlights from the week.

The state's big news: Don't sleep on Class 2A. That's because one of the top teams in the low classification, Florence, toppled 3A juggernaut Elizabeth by a 20-12 score. In this week's Denver Post rankings, Vista Ridge took over the top spot in 3A.

The other big news was a battle between Valor Christian and Grandview in what pitted top teams in 4A and 5A, respectively. The result wasn't shocking, but the margin of victory was. Valor Christian proved yet again they can play with anyone in the state by beating the higher-classified team, 45-17. The reigning 4A champs led wire to wire and dominated on both sides of the ball. It was only Valor's second win against a 5A opponent. Someone pit them up against Mullen already!

To cap off Zero Week, Arvada West plays Longmont tonight in what is just the second Monday night game in the history of Colorado high school football.
