This week, we're going with a new and improved format. We'll highlight a blue-chipper (a first-team player), an OTP (other top player) and an under-the-radar pick (someone who didn't make the squad but is making a case to be on the team).
Blue Chip: James Dowgin, Greeley West, DB
Greeley West is off to a great 3-1 start this season and Dowgin's outstanding play on offense, defense and special teams has been a big reason why. He's played receiver and scored a touchdown in every game so far this year (and has three 100+ games). On defense he's among team leaders in tackles. And he's also returned punts and kicks for the Spartans. Look for Dowgin to continue to have a big impact on the team this season.
OTP: Eric Williams, Rock Canyon, RB
For the second time in three weeks, Williams rushed for more than 200 yards. But this week was his most impressive output yet. The senior running back ran for 309 yards and scored three touchdowns as Rock Canyon scored early and often en route to a 54-20 victory over Falcon. What's perhaps most impressive is that he didn't rush for all three scores — he found one on the ground, one receiving and the third on an interception return on defense. He also had two sacks in the game.
Under the Radar: Connor Clay, Holy Family
Clay's impressive performance in his team's game against Centaurus will be remembered less for his stat line than his big play at the end of the game. That's pretty impressive when you consider Clay rushed for 280 yards in the game. But the junior came up clutch at the end of the game, recovering an onside kick late to clinch the game. Holy Family went on to win, 27-12.
