Xavier claimed its second consecutive state championship with a dominant, exclamation-point victory over Staples. The Falcons hit on all cylinders in the 42-7 rout; senior running back Mike Mastroiani rushed for 239 yards, senior quarterback Pat D'Amato passed for a touchdown, junior quarterback Tim Boyle threw a TD pass, and the defense once again lived up to its billing as the best in the state. Staples came into the game with a perfect 12-0 record and had averaged 46 points in two previous playoff games, but the Xavier defense proved to be too much.
The 2011 season is now complete, and Xavier finishes at No. 1 in the POWERADE state rankings. The Falcons opened the season in the No. 2 spot, but a loss by Masuk in the Class L semifinals left an opening at the top of the rankings. Xavier's dominant postseason run sealed the top spot for the Falcons.
