High-SchoolConnecticut: Rankings

With No. 1 Masuk and No. 2 Xavier rolling, the biggest story to emerge this weekend was the health of New Canaan quarterback Matt Milano. The senior All-State slinger suffered a head injury in the first half of Saturday's game against Stamford, forcing him out of action. He had to watch as Stamford upended the previously undefeated Rams for the first time in 40 years, seriously hampering New Canaan's FCIAC title hopes.

Post-game reports had Milano feeling ok, but there's never an easy timetable to return from head injuries. New Canaan drops to No. 7 in this week's POWERADE state rankings, but the Rams are undoubtedly more concerned with getting their QB back in time for the postseason. Milano has passed for 1,903 yards and 23 touchdowns on the season with just three interceptions.

There was no big shake-up in the POWERADE state rankings this week, as each of the top five teams won by 10-plus points. But a little further down in the rankings, there was something of an upset as Bunnell handed Pomperaug its first loss of the season. Previously ranked No. 8, Pomperaug has now dropped out of the Top 10, while Bunnell (5-0) enters at No. 9.

There was almost no movement in the Connecticut POWERADE state rankings this week, as nine of the teams in the Top 10 were victorious. At the top, No. 1 Masuk and No. 2 Xavier both rolled to easy wins. Things were more exciting for New Canaan, which need a last-second touchdown to pull out a tight contest against McMahon and remain unbeaten.
  1. Masuk (4-0) — Defeated Barlow, 55-12 (last week: No. 1)
  2. Xavier (4-0) — Defeated Amity, 49-7 (last week: No. 2)
