John Herrington, the only football coach in the history of Harrison (Farmington Hills, Mich.), didn't have to look far to replace his graduated quarterback from last year’s team that went 14-0 and won the Division 2 state championship.
All-State selection Tommy Vento, a walk-on at Michigan State, was simply replaced by his brother, Jake Vento, at the throttle of Harrison's offensive unit. The results have been more than positive and Jake Vento has now been chosen as the POWERADE FAB 50 Spotlight Player of the Week.
The younger Vento (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) was a starting wide receiver-defensive back last season and served as a backup quarterback to his older brother. So far this season, Jake has led Harrison to three victories and a No. 13 ranking in the FAB 50. Last weekend, in a 37-0 blanking of Stoney Creek (Rochester Hills, Mich.), Vento completed 9 of 10 passes for 229 yards and three scores and also added two other touchdowns on a run and a pass reception.
The Hawks, who host Oxford (Oxford, Mich.) on Friday, are seeking their 14th state title with a second straight crown led by a quarterback named Vento.

HIGHEST RISING NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
No. 42 St. Bonaventure (Ventura, Calif.)
While the Seraphs stamped themselves as a team to beat in California with their 29-27 victory over previous FAB 50 No. 37 Centennial (Corona, Calif.), they know that the win can only be viewed as a tune-up for competition in their league.
St. Bonaventure is a member of the Ventura County-based Marmonte League, which also includes Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.). Both of those teams posted wins over the Seraphs last season and both should be formidable once again.
Sixteen starters are back for the Seraphs, who went 11-2 in 2010 and beat current FAB 50 ranked Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) in their only game before the 10-team league schedule began. Senior running back Shaun Wick and senior quarterback Marc Evans shined in the win over Centennial. Wick scored on a 7-yard run after the Huskies threatened to take the lead early in the fourth quarter. He also intercepted a pass on defense and ended with 19 carries for 111 yards. Evans completed 14 of 21 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
After Centennial scored with 2:51 left to cut the lead to 29-27, Jordan Farris recovered the onside kick for the Seraphs. Wick and the team’s other running back, junior Zach Green (14 carries, 114 yards), then ran out the clock.
UNANIMOUS SUPPORT
In a voting system such as the one used in the POWERADE FAB 50 rankings each week, it’s always interesting to check out which teams were placed in the same position on every ballot.
No. 1 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.), of course, has been No. 1 on every ballot for the first three weeks of the 2011 regular season. That may not change throughout the year, either, especially if the Ironmen get past both No. 19 Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.) this weekend and then No. 8 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) on Oct. 8.
Two other teams that received the same vote on all ballots were No. 5 Armwood (Seffner, Fla.) and No. 10 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.).
One team that did not get the same vote on all ballots was No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). While the Raiders were listed second on four ballots, one voter had Allen (Allen, Texas) in the No. 2 spot.
