Elite 11 Tracker: Lessons learned

Quarterback is widely regarded as the toughest position not just in football, but in all of sports. Success under center requires a rare blend of physical prowess, character and courage. While there are certainly 11 players contributing to every play, if there is one position in this ultimate team sport that demands decisive leadership on every snap, it's at QB.

With the specificity and importance of the position in mind, the Elite 11 regional camps and week-long final event seek to gather the best incoming senior prep quarterbacks in the country every spring and summer in order to teach and test these talented signal-callers with the best coaching and competition available. In 2011, the 13th year of the Elite 11 QB competition, a supremely talented crop of 24 quarterbacks was fielded.

ESPNHS spoke with some of the elite arms that made it to the campus of Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. this past July for the event finals about their experiences during the Elite 11 process and how it prepared them for their senior seasons and propelled their games to another level.

Elite 11 Alum of the Week

Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos

You would have to be hiding in a hole not to notice what the former Florida Gator has been doing for the Denver Broncos lately. Just tune into any sports radio show or any ESPN channel and you'll find that he is often the main topic of discussion. It's easy to watch a Broncos game and see his deficiencies as a quarterback, but one has to remember it's only his second year at the highest level and time well tell if he can improve his mechanics and become a more polished passer. The bottom line is that the Broncos are in first place thanks to their 7-1 record since Tebow was named the starter. This weekend will be the toughest test the team has faced since Tebow took over, with a matchup versus the New England Patriots and Tom Brady. It could once again come down to the final minutes, as the Patriots have given up the most fourth-quarter points in the NFL.

Other top performances from around the country

Austin Aune, Sr., Argyle (Argyle, Texas)
20-of-29 for 284 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 24-14 win over Monahans (Monahans, Texas)

12-of-26 for 287 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in a 54-35 loss to Hightower (Fort Bend, Texas)

Elite 11: Kline vs. Houston for NorCal crown

December, 7, 2011

PM ET
xTom Hauck/ESPNHSSan Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.) QB Zach Kline was recently named the Gatorade State Player of the Year for California.
ESPNHS will follow the weekly progress of the ESPNHS Elite 11 quarterbacks during their senior seasons. In addition we will track the top quarterback performances from around the country. The Elite 11 Tracker will be featured every Wednesday.

Football fans in Northern California are sure to take notice of Zach Kline as he has San Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.) rolling into the NCS D1 championship game set for Saturday. But there is a big obstacle ahead with Kline and San Ramon Valley facing Fab 50 No. 11 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) and fellow Elite 11 quarterback Bart Houston in the title game. De La Salle easily handled San Ramon Valley earlier this year 40-3. With a win, De La Salle will probably advance to California's open division bowl game against Southern California's top team for the third straight year.

x
Tom Hauck/ESPNHSSDSU QB Ryan Lindley at the 2011 Elite 11.
Ryan Lindley, Sr., San Diego State University

San Diego State will be going to back-to-back bowl games for the first time since the '66 and '67 seasons largely due to the success and leadership of Lindley. This season Lindley completed 52 percent of his passes for 2,740 yards and 20 touchdowns -- making it three straight years of 20 or more passing scores. Elite 11 Tracker: MVP Winston Going Strong

November, 23, 2011
11/23/11
10:40
AM ET
xTom Hauck/ESPNHSFlorida State commit Jameis Winston has Hueytown (Hueytown, Ala.) two wins away from a state title.
ESPNHS will follow the weekly progress of the ESPNHS Elite 11 quarterbacks during their senior seasons. In addition we will track the top quarterback performances from around the country. The Elite 11 Tracker will be featured every Wednesday.

It was another great weekend for Connor Brewer, Zach Kline, Patton Robinette and Patrick Towles as all led their squads to playoff wins. But not every elite arm had such a great weekend. In very unfortunate news, Oregon commit Jake Rodrigues' season came to an abrupt end during Whitney's (Rocklin, Calif.) first-round playoff win when late in the third quarter trying to extend a play, he suffered a dislocated ankle and broken leg.

Down in Alabama, Elite 11 co-MVP Jameis Winston continues to roll and has led Hueytown (Hueytown, Ala.) to the state semifinal's with perhaps his best all-around performance of the year, accounting for 304 total yards and five touchdowns.

See how the rest of the field did this past weekend as well as other performances from around the country in this weeks Elite 11 Tracker.

Tom Hauck/ESPNHSJacory Harris at the 2007 Elite 11
Elite 11 Alum of the Week: Jacory Harris, Sr., University of Miami
In what appeared to be a potential lost season as year began the senior quarterback has shown no affects of an early season suspension. Harris has performed at a high level in every game he has started and despite a 3-3 record, the Hurricanes are just a couple of plays away from being at least two games better. Over the weekend, the 2007 Elite 11 quarterback led the "U" to a season saving 30-24 road win over North Carolina. In the game, Harris was 20-of-30 for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Most impressive on the season so far for Harris has been his accuracy and how much he has cut down on interceptions. This was the third straight game without throwing a pick and just has three on the year after throwing 32 over the past two seasons.

Other top performances from around the country:

-Brian Buell, Sr., Sr., Jesuit (Dallas, Texas)
23-of-32 for 427 yards, eight touchdowns and an interception in a 62-30 win over Richardson (Richardson, Texas)

-Dalton Conway, Sr., Jeffersonville (Jeffersonville, Ind.)
16-of-27 for 309 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-24 win over Jennings County (North Vernon, Ind.)

Get Familiar: Tanner Mangum

Tanner MangumTom Hauck/ESPNHSBYU commit Tanner Mangum, Eagle (Eagle, Idaho), was one of three MVPs at the Elite 11 finals this summer.

Not the fastest but the first.

Tanner Mangum’s older brother Parker offered this advice to Mangum when he began playing football in the second grade. It was his way of telling his younger brother that even if he might not be the most athletic player on the football field, he could still be the best player on it if he put in the time to improve.

The advice has stuck with Mangum throughout his career. The Eagle (Eagle, Idaho) senior quarterback knew that if he wanted to get noticed in a state not known for producing elite football talent, he’d have to work his tail off to excel against the nation’s best when the opportunity presented itself.

Mission accomplished. This offseason, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder shined at the Elite 11 finals, where he was named co-MVP, and at Nike Football’s “The Opening” to establish himself as one of the nation’s premier signal-callers. Mangum is now rated the No. 10 quarterback and No. 148 overall recruit in the ESPNU 150.

It was a satisfying way to cap off what was a frustrating year for Mangum, who missed the majority of his junior season with a broken collarbone. And he’s carried that momentum into his senior season, throwing for 1,181 yards, 13 touchdowns and just two picks through his first four games (4-0).

Mangum has committed to BYU, but he won’t set foot on the Provo campus until the summer of 2014 when he completes his two-year LDS mission.

But before he does, he’s looking to cap off his high school career with a state title.

So what drives this well-rounded QB? It’s time to Get Familiar with Tanner Mangum.
