Athlete spotlight: Allie Ostrander
By Susie Arth
Allie Ostrander, a 5-foot, 70-pound freshman at Kenai Central (Kenai, Alaska), has set two course records in cross country and is gearing up for the Oct. 1 state meet.
It's not easy to make big strides on varsity as a freshman, but Allie Ostrander of Kenai Central (Kenai, Alaska) has done just that.
The 5-foot, 70-pound sensation has already set two course records in cross country.
On Aug. 27, she won Alaska's biggest invitational, Skyview, running 17 minutes, 53 seconds for 5,000 meters. She won by 53 seconds and smashed the course record by 50 seconds.
On Sept. 3, Ostrander won the 4,810-meter Colony Invite in 17:19 for a 62-second win and another course record.
Now she's starting to gear up for the Oct. 1 state meet.
“I am excited (about running at state). I’ve never run that course,” she said.
But she's not single-minded.
This winter, Ostrander plans to pursue basketball in the winter and soccer in the spring.
“Soccer is a huge passion,” said Ostrander, who plays midfielder. “I really love it. It’s so fun to me, and I love my team and the atmosphere of it.”
