Weekend Watch: Five must-see matches

Each week during the high school season, ESPNHS highlights five weekend matches that have a compelling storyline or could have significant state, region and/or national implications. This is the final week for the matches to watch for the fall high school season.

This week, the I-10 Shootout in the Houston area -- featuring four teams ranked in the top 30 -- highlights the weekly schedule.

Friday, Jan. 20

No. 7 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) vs. El Camino (Oceanside, Calif.): Thanks to a loss by Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) earlier this week, La Costa Canyon has a chance to regain the highest ranking among the San Diego powers in next week’s POWERADE FAB 50. However, the team will need to get past El Camino, which is off to a solid 6-3-2 start.

Friday, Jan. 20-Saturday, Jan. 21

I-10 Shootout: While the National Elite Prep Showcase got top billing in Texas last week, the I-10 Shootout is this week’s key high school event. No. 12 Seven Lakes (Katy, Texas), No. 13 The Woodlands (Texas), No. 24 Klein Oak (Klein, Texas) and No. 27 Westlake (Austin, Texas) highlight the competitive field. In opening round action Thursday, Westlake and Seven Lakes tied 1-1 before Westlake advanced on penalty kicks.

Marcus Tournament in Flower Mound, Texas: No. 2 Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) will need a three-game sweep at its event to remain in the top five.

Colleyville Heritage Tournament in Colleyville, Texas: No. 1 Carroll (Southlake, Texas) highlights the field at this annual event that will include Heritage, a state tournament participant last year.

Saturday, Jan. 21

No. 21 Carondelet (Concord, Calif.) vs. No. 46 Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.): There’s never a dull match in the East Bay Athletic League, which is one of the nation’s most competitive leagues – not only top to bottom, but also nationally. Two of the league’s nationally ranked programs will meet up Saturday when Carondelet, coming off a tie, faces undefeated Monte Vista.
