Wheaton South looks for first win

By By Mike Grimala

It's not easy being Wheaton South right now. The Tigers are ranked No. 8 in our Illinois Top 10, but the team has yet to taste victory. In Week 1, the two-time defending state champs lost to No. 2 Glenbard West. Last week, they were turned away by No. 1 Maine South. Two weeks into the season, and Wheaton South has already played the top two teams in the state. Can't face a much tougher schedule than that.

But the Tigers weren't outclassed in either game, and there is enough talent on the roster to turn things around in a hurry. I think it starts tonight against Aurora West.

The Game:
Aurora West at No. 8 Wheaton South
Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The Players:
Wheaton South — The coaching staff hasn't been able to settle on a quarterback yet, giving snaps to both senior Thaddeus Armstrong and sophomore Ryan Graham. The first one to give a spark to the Tigers' inconsistent offense could win the job outright.

Aurora West — The Blackhawks rely on their defense to win games, and the man in the middle is lineback Brandon Warren. The senior has made some big plays this year; if he creates a turnover early in this game, Wheaton South will start to sweat.

The Stakes:
Aurora West is a quality team, but this game means more to Wheaton South. A win here, and all is forgiven. The first two weeks can be brushed off and blamed on an insanely unlucky schedule. A loss, and it's time to start questioning whether the Tigers have it this season.

The Prediction:
Wheaton South scores two early touchdowns and jumps out to a big lead. Aurora West steadily climbs back into the game, but the Wheaton defense steps up in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Give Wheaton South its first victory. WHEATON SOUTH 22, AURORA WEST 13

Other notable games

No. 1 Maine South at Deerfield
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Maine South squeaked past Wheaton South last week, but I don't think Deerfield has the talent to hang for more than a quarter. MAINE SOUTH 45, DEERFIELD 6

No. 2 Glenbard West at Lyons
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
This matchup went Lyons' way last year, and don't think the Glenbard West veterans have forgotten. GLENBARD WEST 32, LYONS 13

Lake Forest Academy at No. 6 Loyola Academy
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
If you've been paying attention, you know that I love Loyola QB Malcolm Weaver this week. LOYOLA ACADEMY 38, LAKE FOREST ACADEMY 16
