As part of our weekly football coverage, I offer up my hypothetical fantasy football picks every Thursday. Note: This league is completely made up. If you are in a high school fantasy football league, please seek professional help.
RB — Danny Puknaitis, Naperville North
Coming off last weekend’s upset of Wheaton South, the Huskies are riding serious momentum. Puknaitis could end up being the main beneficiary. The senior ran for 115 yards a week ago, and West Chicago’s defense doesn’t compare to Wheaton South’s. Puknaitis has also been consistent so far — he’s rushed for at least 97 yards in every game and scored a touchdown in each contest — so you can start him with confidence.
Projection: 19 carries, 155 yards, 2 TDs
QB — Mike Martz, Mater Dei-Breese
Mater Dei is closer to St. Louis than Chicago, so Martz doesn’t get a ton of pub around the Windy City. But the junior has been putting up good numbers all season. And he’s getting better with each week. Against Freeburg last weekend, he passed for 320 yards and threw six touchdown passes, which is one of the best QB performances I’ve seen so far this year. If he can give half of that production tomorrow against Breese Central, Martz is a good play.
Projection: 15 of 23, 260 yards, 3 TDs
RB — Josh Williams, Downers Grove South
Williams has been one of the state’s most productive players through the first four weeks of the season, carrying 80 times for 1,022 yards and 12 touchdowns. With a big game against rival Downers Grove North on tap, expect Williams to get plenty of touches. If he hits his per-game averages, you’ll want him in your lineup.
Projection: 22 carries, 205 yards, 3 TDs
QB — Austin Green, Rochester
Green has done a tremendous job filling in for injured senior QB Wes Lunt, but now that Lunt is on the verge of returning from a broken foot, this is the time to sell high on Green.
* Projections based on 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR format; No PPR
