High-SchoolIndiana: Rankings

The final week of the regular season proved to be a calm one across the board, as there were no seismic events in the POWERADE state rankings. Carmel looked sloppy in the first half before pulling things together to defeat Ben Davis, 20-10, but other than that, the favorites emerged unscathed. No. 1 Warren Central rolled in a tune-up win over Center Grove, while Penn used a 26-14 win over Adams to leapfrog Ben Davis into the No. 3 spot.

Just as a quick programming note, remember that ESPNHS will not be doing weekly state rankings once the playoffs begin. The way I see it, the playoffs are the actual, real-life rankings, and the postseason will do a much better job of determining the best teams than I ever could. I will be doing weekly previews and post-mortems on all the playoff action, so keep checking the blog for the latest. And of course, we'll be doing our final rankings after the conclusion of the postseason.
  1. Warren Central (9-0) — Defeated Center Grove, 54-21 (last week: No. 1)
  2. Carmel (8-1) — Defeated Ben Davis, 20-10 (last week: No. 2)
  3. Penn (9-0) — Defeated Adams, 26-14 (last week: No. 4)

After last week's No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown, there were no real headline games on this weekend's schedule. As a result, none of the top teams were pushed too much, as the top eight teams in the Indiana POWERADE state rankings all won by at least 19 points. No. 1 Warren Central continues to tune up for the postseason, as the Warriors revved up the rushing attack in a 55-13 win over Terre Haute South. No. 2 Carmel was just as impressive, bouncing back from its loss to Warren Central last week by tearing apart Terre Haute North, 63-0.
  1. Warren Central (8-0) — Defeated Terre Haute South, 55-13 (last week: No. 1)
  2. Carmel (7-1) — Defeated Terre Haute North, 63-0 (last week: No. 2)
  3. Ben Davis (7-1) — Defeated Lawrence North, 41-14 (last week: No. 3)

Week 6 rankings: Cathedral drops

September, 26, 2011
The biggest game of the weekend ended badly for Indiana, as Cathedral lost to Kentucky powerhouse Louisville-Trinity, 36-14. Trinity is ranked No. 7 nationally in the POWERADE FAB 50, so a Cathedral win would have been a major upset. But still, the Irish drop from No. 3 to No. 7 in the POWERADE state rankings. Warren Central and Carmel continued their dominant seasons, easily holding onto their spots atop the rankings. Now let the hype begin, as they will meet on Friday night in what should be the "Game of the Season" (regular season edition).
  1. Warren Central (6-0) — Defeated Terre Haute North, 50-19 (last week: No. 1)
  2. Carmel (6-0) — Defeated North Central, 56-0 (last week: No. 2)
  3. Ben Davis (6-0) — Defeated Terre Haute South, 63-17 (last week: No. 3)

Week 5 rankings: Chalk City

September, 19, 2011
Week 5 of the Indiana football season didn't hold many surprises, as the chalk held and all the top 10 teams were victorious. Therefore, there are no changes in this week's POWERADE state rankings. Warren Central played without senior RB Deionte Buckley, who suffered a head injury last week, but junior Shaquille Breeding filled in nicely to lead the Warriors past North Central. No. 2 Carmel may have looked better than any other team, blowing Lawrence North off the field, 45-0.
  1. Warren Central, 5-0 — Defeated North Central, 48-16 (last week: No. 1)
  2. Carmel, 5-0 — Defeated Lawrence North, 45-0 (last week: No. 2)
  3. Cathedral, 3-2 — Defeated Bishop Dwenger, 42-3 (last week: No. 3)

The Hamilton SE football team has jumped from No. 6 to No. 3 in our rankings after an impressive win over then-No. 2 Fishers this weekend.

Hamilton SE linebacker David Calhoun made the biggest play of the game, intercepting a pass and returning it 95 yards for a touchdown just before halftime, giving the Royals a 14-0 lead.

At the top of the rankings, Warren Central survived a challenge from No. 7 Cathedral, holding on for a 27-24 win. Carmel moved up into the No. 2 spot with a 49-0 rout of Valparaiso.

The top three teams are listed below, with full rankings after the jump.
