ESPN High School: What other school’s did you consider?
Mackenzie Harper: “I considered Grand Valley State, Florida Southern, Franklin Pierce, and St. Mary’s College of Maryland.”
EHS: What made Findlay such an attractive choice?
MH: “I wanted a campus that was small enough to walk everywhere, but large enough to meet a variety of people. Findlay was just that. The location was convenient, the campus was beautiful, and the educational opportunities were perfect. Coach Duffy and the new lacrosse program were definitely a huge influence on my decision. The program has serious potential and I know that with Julia Duffy as a coach, the program will be outstanding. I just couldn’t see myself anywhere else.”
EHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?
MH: “I was very surprised about how many opportunities for lacrosse were out there. I went into the process in fear that there wasn’t a place for me to play, but I soon realized that there is a place for everyone interested in playing at the college level.”
EHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?
MH: “I always would ask what the college was like where they coached. No matter how much I liked a coach, it was important to make sure that the college had my major and was a place I could see myself living for four years. It was important for me to consider the size and location of the campus before I made it one of my options. Picking a college should not just be about the coach and lacrosse team, but about the education and the campus.”
EHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?
MH: “I would advise not to eliminate any colleges right away. Just because you’ve never heard of the college, doesn’t mean it’s a bad place. I had never heard of Findlay with it being a small campus and a new lacrosse program, but it ended up being the perfect place for me. I also wouldn’t eliminate a college just because of its location. I always wanted to go to college on the east coast but Findlay was just such a great place.”
EHS: Is there anything about the recruiting process that you think could change that would have made it easier or less stressful for you?
MH: “In the beginning, not knowing what the next step was and comparing myself to others was extremely stressful. It was very helpful having someone tell me what to expect in the recruiting process. Just playing the best I could on the field and not worrying about the intimidation of the coaches and their clipboards made the process a lot less stressful.”
