Malvern Prep (Malvern Prep, Pa.) junior Chad Rafferty has given his verbal commitment to play men's lacrosse for the University of Maryland.
Rafferty, a 2013 graduate, was named to the ESPNHS Watch List as a sophomore defenseman. The defender also earned 2011 Gait Fab 40 All-Star honors at the Philly Showcase and was a 2011 North Carolina Team Camp All-Star.
Maryland reached the 2011 National Championship game this past spring.
ESPN High School: What other schools did you consider?
Chad Rafferty: “I also considered North Carolina, Ohio State, and Villanova.”
EHS: What made Maryland such an attractive choice?
CR: “The coaching staff, the team, and the Maryland lacrosse tradition are all the things that I am excited to be part of. The size of the school and the academics are a good overall fit for me.”
EHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?
CR: “I was surprised at how early and quickly things happened. I don't know how the college coaches decided who they want because there are so many great lacrosse players at every tournament.”
EHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?
CR: “I think the most important questions I asked college coaches were how does my style of play fit into their scheme, and what is their coaching philosophy.”
EHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?
CR: “I would tell players who are just starting the process to take their time and not rush things. Make sure the school is a good fit academically and socially before looking into the lacrosse program. Try to visualize yourself at the school and make sure you feel good about your decision.”
EHS: Is there anything about the recruiting process that you think could change that would have made it easier or less stressful for you?
CR: “I think that a specific date when juniors are allowed to verbally commit should be part of the NCAA rules. That way coaches can still talk to athletes and have offers out there, but the athlete knows the earliest date that an answer is expected and knows how much time he has to find the best fit.”
