Winthrop University is located in Rock Hill, S.C. and is a Division I program in the Big South Conference.

ESPN High School: What other school’s did you consider?

Samantha Pontius: “Louisville, St. Mary’s, High Point, James Madison, UConn.”

EHS: What made Winthrop such an attractive choice?

SP: “The strength of their marketing program, the beautiful campus and facilities.”

EHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?

SP: “How early the whole process starts.”

EHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?

SP: “How many players the team is taking on that year.”

EHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?

SP: “To really appreciate this exciting time of your lacrosse career and as stressful as things may get to never lose sight of the love of the sport. And to also start SAT preparation early as possible.”

EHS: Is there anything about the recruiting process that you think could change that would have made it easier or less stressful for you?

SP: “If I could have changed anything about my recruiting process it is that I would have been more relaxed going into it, girls need to realize there that there are so many schools out there that they need to remember there is a place for everyone.”
