Weekend tourneys have FAB 50 implications
By Mike Loveday
Justin Guterding has helped Garden City (N.Y.) to a Top 10 ranking in the POWERADE FAB 50.
Saturday, April 14 is a big day for teams in the boys’ and girls’ POWERADE FAB 50.
Two events, the Checking for Cancer Invitational and the St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Spring Fling, will pit several FAB 50 teams against each other in what will be a pivotal weekend for the rankings.
What: St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Spring Fling
When: Saturday, April 14
Where: St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School (Alexandria, Va.)
Why It Matters: Five FAB 50 programs will play over the course of four hours: Georgetown Visitation (Washington, D.C.), Good Counsel (Olney, Md.), Loyola Academy (Wilmette, Ill.), Notre Dame Prep (Baltimore) and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes.
No. 21 Notre Dame Prep vs. No. 8 Georgetown Visitation The top team in Washington D.C. meets one of the top teams from Baltimore. Tess McEvoy leads Visitation with 27 goals this season, including a five-goal, two-assist game in a win over Good Counsel earlier this year. The Blazers already have two wins over FAB 50 schools this season and look to rebound after losing its first two games last week.
No. 18 St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes vs. No. 38 Good Counsel ESPNHS No. 2 Junior Carly Reed has been on a tear this year, scoring 33 goals in seven games. The Good Counsel game kicks off a stretch in which the Saints play three FAB 50 teams in their next three games. Led by Caroline Peters, Good Counsel will be playing its second game of the day when it meets the Saints. Junior Caroline Peters leads the team with 12 goals this season.
What: Checking For Cancer Invitational
When: Saturday, April 14
Where: Haverford School (Haverford, Pa.)
Why It Matters: In addition to being one of the top events for premier boys’ lacrosse, the Checking for Cancer Invitational raises money and awareness for three men’s cancers: prostate, testicular and colon. Proceeds totaling $13,500 from the 2011 tournament were donated to the Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia last year.
No. 1 Conestoga (Berwyn, Pa.) vs. No. 4 Garden City (N.Y.) Conestoga has already taken down three FAB 50 teams this season and to hold on to the No. 1 ranking it will have to defeat four more, starting with Garden City. The Pioneers' goalie Robbie Zonino (Michigan) and defense will have to stop the Trojans combination of Devin Dwyer (20 assists, 11 goals), Liam Kennedy (17 goals, 4 assists) and Justin Guterding (14 goals, 13 assists).
No. 20 Georgetown Prep (Bethesda, Md.) vs. No. 46 Delbarton (N.J.) Led by senior Connor Bilby (four goals, two assists), Delbarton looks to get a statement win after starting the season 1-2. Do not expect much offense as Georgetown Prep has yet to allow more than nine goals in a game this year and allows an average of just 3.9 goals per game.
