ESPNHS continues its weekly feature, Around the Crease, which takes a look at players, teams and high school lacrosse news from around the country.

Charlotte Country Day (Charlotte, N.C.) has won the last four NCISAA state championships and has a number of players that have moved on to Division I college programs.

Look Who’s Playing

The next player on that list could be junior midfielder Michael Radford.

Radford was the team’s leading faceoff midfielder last season as a sophomore and with the graduation of Thomas Passenant (Hofstra) will take on a larger role in 2012.

“He had a real good ability to control most of the draws,” Charlotte Country Day head coach Brad Touma said. “We knew we were going to lean on him heavily. A lot of our offense started with him either trying to find the right matchup or driving down the alley.”

“Michael has good body control and good reflexes,” Touma added when asked about Radford’s faceoff ability. “He’s big, strong with a low center of gravity and very quick wrists.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior is also a football recruit who started at quarterback and led the Buccaneers to the state championship game last month. Radford threw for 1417 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.

Touma expects Radford to get more focus from opposing defenses this season since the Buccaneers graduated both wingmen and a large part of the offense from last year’s team.

So far Radford has an offer from High Point and has heard from Georgetown, Jacksonville, Rutgers and Ohio State. Radford is going on an unofficial visit to Ohio State in January.

This week’s club section takes a slightly different angle – taking a look at a club team that is still filling its rosters.

Goin' Clubbing

The Lehigh Valley Steam was created by John Seitzinger who is also the girls’ head coach at Parkland (Allentown, Pa.).

The Steam is a boys’ and girls’ program located in Allentown, which is about 50 miles north of Philadelphia.

“We wanted to get more exposure for the kids from the Lehigh Valley for lacrosse,” Seitzinger said. “We want to prepare kids at the youth level for what high school coaches expect and to give high school players a better understanding of the game in regards to what college coaches expect them to know at that level.”

The program has already filled its U-11 team, placing 24 athletes on the team. Tryouts for U-13, U-15, JV and Varsity boys teams will occur on Sunday, Feb. 26. The teams will be made up of 20-22 kids per age group.

Top Girls’ Commitment: The Michigan's men's program has garnered a lot of headlines this fall, but last week the women's program stole the headlines.
