ESPN High School: What other school’s did you consider?
nullESPNHSBrittany Worstell from Stone Bridge (Ashburn, Va.) on her visit to Syracuse.
Brittany Worstell: “The great thing about this recruiting process for me was the fact that I knew my mom and dad wanted me to make this decision myself. My mom (Valerie) graduated from George Mason and my father (Tom) and two of his three brothers graduated from the University of Maryland where they each played lacrosse. My dad’s oldest brother played lacrosse at the University of North Carolina as well. With that said, I was thinking that an ACC school was the best fit for me for sure. Over time though, I began to think more openly about my options. I wanted to attend a school where I felt most comfortable first, so my parents along with my high school coaches and my Summer and fall club team coach, recommended that I attend a few of the summer camps or fall clinics at the schools that I wanted to target, so this past Fall and Summer, I attended camps/clinics at the University of Syracuse, University of Maryland, University of North Carolina and the University of Florida as examples. Over the last three months, after taking into account what schools I was most interested in attending and playing for, I wanted to narrow it down to two schools and focus on them, so I chose to focus on my top two schools, which were Syracuse University and the University of Florida.”
EHS: What made Syracuse such an attractive choice?
BW: “Syracuse is known to have an awesome tradition both academically and athletically. When you add to that, the fact that I have an opportunity to play for a coaching staff like the one that Syracuse has assembled, I felt like I had to jump on board quickly. Each coach on their staff has won a NCAA National Championship (or more) during their playing days. This is a huge accomplishment by itself, but when you add to that the fact that Coach Gait has won seven or so NCAA Championships as a coach as well, it only makes sense to jump on board with him and Coach Thorpe and Coach Dowd. During my family trips to Syracuse with my parents over the last year, we have had so much fun and it just feels like home for me at Syracuse. Additionally, my Grandfather played lacrosse at Syracuse back in the Jim Brown days, so having my grandparents support is always nice to have as well. My Cousin (Patrick Worstell) also recently committed to play at Syracuse for Coach Desko, so the family connection at Syracuse was also a big part in my decision making process.”
EHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?
BW: “In my opinion, what really surprised me the most was the fact that in the end, it really is in your best interest as a player to go to a summer camps at the schools that you are most interested in order to help you (and also the coaching staff at the schools) make the right decision for everyone involved. What also amazed me was the fact that no matter what college or university I visited, my parents and I were treated like gold. Every head coach, assistant coach and also any players that we met, were all so nice to us.”
EHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?
BW: “Honestly, by the time it came down to questions at the end of any of my unofficial visits, oddly enough I struggled to think of any major questions that hadn't already been answered during the time we spent with any of the members of the schools staff, so both my parents and I felt like each school did an exceptional job at answering any questions early on in the process.”
EHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?
BW: “Play for your Summer and Fall Club Teams for sure, but do yourself a favor and find the time to go to the summer camps at the schools that you are most interested in attending.”
