After holding down the top spot for the majority of the season, Lansing Sexton reigns as our No. 1 team in the POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings. The Big Reds, led by senior star Denzel Valentine (No. 97 in the ESPNU 100), toppled Lakeshore in the Class B final to cruise to a second consecutive state title. Other state champions included Saginaw, Beecher (who validated us with a state title after we kept them higher in the rankings than any other state rankings group) and Southfield Christian. Congratulations to all of this year's state champions.

1. Lansing Sexton (29-1) Last week: No. 1

2. Saginaw (25-2) Last week: No. 2

3. Beecher (28-0) Last week: No. 5

Just three games separate the teams below from a state championship. Three wins and the season ends in glory; any fewer and it's a reminder of what could have been. Only teams that have advanced to the state quarterfinals in their respective classes have earned a spot in our POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings; two of them face off Tuesday night when No. 4 Romulus takes on No. 3 Pershing. Next week will be our final rankings; by then we'll know who the state champ is.

1. Sexton (24-1) Last week: No. 1

2. Saginaw (23-2) Last week: No. 2

3. Pershing (22-2) Last week: No. 5

We're through the district tournament, and now things are getting good. Already we've seen some upsets that have shaken up the balance of power in the POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings, knocking out three teams (including one squad that looked firmly entrenched in the top five). Some bubble teams just waiting for their shot have taken their place, and now begins the slow climb either to the top or a quick descent to the bubble for the remainder of the season.

1. Sexton (22-1) Last week: No. 1

2. Saginaw (21-2) Last week: No. 2

3. Romulus (19-3) Last week: No. 3

Sure, nobody dropped out of the POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings this week. Don't expect that streak to continue much longer. With the district (and soon, state) tournaments ramping up, it's time for the top teams to show they're title contenders or risk falling out entirely. Even a top team such as Sexton can go from No. 1 to bubble team in just one week. Three unbeaten teams remain in the rankings, but one loss now will mean an early exit.

1. Sexton (19-1) Last week: No. 1

2. Saginaw (18-2) Last week: No. 5

3. Beecher (20-0) Last week: No. 3

Consider this the calm before the storm. Sexton remains our top team in the POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings, but the postseason is right around the corner and things could get interesting quickly. Four undefeated teams remain in the ranks, while Pershing - the only team to have beaten Sexton this year - lurks in the shadows hoping for a chance to regain the No. 1 spot. At this point, it's still anyone's game, and there are plenty of teams who have state title aspirations right now.

1. Sexton (17-1) Last week: No. 1

2. Pershing (18-1) Last week: No. 2

3. Beecher (19-0) Last week: No. 3

There's a new No. 1 in Michigan this week, and it's Lansing Sexton. All the Big Reds did last week was take care of business, earning victories against Holt and East Lansing to move to 15-1. That, coupled with Pershing's first loss of the season, helped Sexton move up to the top spot. Pershing fell in the Detroit PSL title game to Detroit King, finally showing a bit of mortality. No teams drop out this week, but there's sure to be a little moving and shaking in the final games before the regional and state tournaments begin. Stay tuned to find out who is up and who is down next week.

1. Sexton (15-1) Last week: No. 2

2. Pershing (18-1) Last week: No. 1

3. Beecher (17-0) Last week: No. 3

This week's rankings are mostly intact as the schedule starts creeping into district and city tournaments. Pershing and Sexton continue to be neck-and-neck as each jockeys for their respective titles; Class A for Pershing, Class B for Sexton. It's a shame we won't see them duel again this season. In Class C, Beecher looks to be the class of the state as they remain undefeated and climbed up to No. 3 this week. Some losses to mid-range teams in our POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings caused a bit of re-shuffling, and we welcome undefeated Pewamo-Westphalia to the mix for what is a long-overdue inclusion into our top 10.

1. Pershing (17-0) Last week: No. 1

2. Sexton (17-1) Last week: No. 2

3. Beecher (16-0) Last week: No. 4

There's only one significant change to this week's POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings, and it's the addition of Petoskey to the mix. The Northmen have been quietly biding their time, waiting for someone to drop out, and a tough week by Arthur Hill knocks them out and gives Petoskey the nod. The Northmen average a margin of victory of better than 19.5 points per contest - an impressive figure. The team also averages nearly 62 points per game. Numbers like that will make the squad dangerous in the postseason.

1. Pershing (15-0) Last week: No. 1

2. Sexton (11-1) Last week: No. 2

3. Romulus (12-2) Last week: No. 3

The standings in the POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings are so tight, even a 12-point loss to one of the region's top teams is enough to go plummeting down the ranks. That's what happened to Lansing Eastern following a tough loss to No. 2 Sexton, a loss that would be nondescript except that it gave top teams such as Beecher and Lansing Catholic Central, which are still unbeaten, a chance to finally move up the ladder. There are now just two losses among the top five teams combined, meaning any loss, no matter how great, can spell doom for a team hoping to stay ranked.

1. Pershing (14-0) Last week: No. 1

2. Sexton (10-1) Last week: No. 2

3. Romulus (9-2) Last week: No. 9

It was a tough week for teams in the top 10 of our POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings, none more so than Detroit Consortium. Following an ugly incident against Bowman Academy (Gary, Ind.), Consortium Prep forfeited its next two games and dropped out of our top 10. Clarkston dropped its first game of the season, Detroit King fell to top-seeded Pershing and Arthur Hill fell to Saginaw, which joined the rankings this week. Losses mean shakeups, and there were no shortage of shakeups this week.

1. Pershing (12-0) Last week: No. 1

2. Sexton (8-1) Last week: No. 2

3. Lansing Eastern (9-1) Last week: No. 10

It's been a long time coming, but Pershing has finally jumped into the top spot in our POWERADE Michigan Weekly rankings. The Doughboys have played themselves to a perfect 10-0 mark to start the season thanks to an impressive one-point victory over former No. 1 Lansing Sexton. Senior Sherron Dorsey-Walker, an ESPNHS All-State first-teamer, has had consecutive 26-point outings including in the win over Sexton. The top teams are holding firm, as nobody dropped out this week.

1. Pershing (10-0) Last week: No. 2

2. Sexton (7-1) Last week: No. 1

3. Consortium Prep (6-1) Last week: No. 3

This week, littered on the outside looking in are teams with high expectations that have failed to get off to the kind of starts necessary to stay in the top 10 of our POWERADE Michigan Weekly Rankings. It's tough to stay on top, which is why teams like Sexton and Consortium Prep and Pershing have been pleasant surprises. It's expectation mixed with success. But these teams can't get complacent; not when talented squads such as Clarkston, Detroit King and Beecher are hot on their heels.

1. Sexton (6-0) Last week: No. 1

2. Consortium Prep (6-0) Last week: No. 2

3. Pershing (7-0) Last week: No. 3

Now that the 2011 slate of games is in the books, teams can turn their attention to the important contests looming in the early part of 2012. January can be a big month for teams looking for make a mark. And teams that got off to slow starts, whether it be due to injuries, tough out-of-state competition or just lackluster performance, will be ready to turn it around. There wasn't much change this week in Michigan, with Sexton still holding down the top spot in our rankings and nobody dropping out. We'll see if that continues.

1. Sexton (5-0) Last week: No. 1

2. Consortium Prep (5-0) Last week: No. 3

3. Pershing (6-0) Last week: No. 4

Sexton is holding on to our top spot early, but there's plenty of teams waiting for the Big Reds to fall as the season switches from 2011 to the bulk of the campaign in 2012. Fellow unbeatens such as Kalamazoo Central, Pershing and Consortium Prep has their sights set on the top spot, while newcomers Clarkston and Detroit King also have perfect marks and are ready to make some noise statewide.

It's very early in the Michigan basketball season, but teams are taking care of business early on. Sexton has jumped into our top spot after jumping all over Grand Ledge, 89-47, in the team's first contest. It's a slow slate to begin the year. for the Big Reds; they have just two more games this year before the slate gets busy in January. Kalamazoo Central and Detroit Community also jumped out to hot starts, while Romulus dropped a few spots with an early-season loss.

1. Lansing Sexton (1-0)

2. Kalamazoo Central (2-0)

3. Detroit Community (2-0)
