Minnesota Preps Pick'em: Week 6

10/7/2011

Each week we'll take three intriguing matchups and put our knowledge to the test with some predictions. If you think your team's game is one of the best on the schedule, let us know in the comments or on Twitter @CParishESPNHS and we'll put it up for debate.

(Ranks are based on ESPNHS state rankings)

No. 6 Lakeville South (5-0) at No. 8 Lakeville North (5-0)

Well, one thing's for certain — someone in Lakeville is going home a winner tonight. South has been one of the state's most dominant teams and the defense has gotten better every week; over the last three games the Cougars have allowed just 13 points, and they shut out Rosemount last week in a 17-0 win. On offense, senior QB Mitchell Leidner is among the state's best signal-callers. North, meanwhile, has had some closer games. But when the offense needs to go, the Panthers are capable of scoring in bunches. PREDICTION: Lakeville South 28, Lakeville North 24

Shakopee (5-0) vs. Holy Angels (5-0)

You could make a case that both of these teams could be ranked in the POWERADE Minnesota Weekly Rankings. One of them may well get there after this week. Which one will depend on their respective defenses. Holy Angels has posted two shutouts and allowed just seven points in another contest. But in the other two games the team gave up a combined total of 53 points. That won't fly against Shakopee, which has scored 40+ in four of its five games and has already rushed for more than 2,000 yards this season (an average of 400 per game). PREDICTION: Shakopee 31, Holy Angels 21

Holy Family Catholic (5-0) vs. No. 4 St. Thomas Academy (5-0)

Outscoring your opponents by a 198-33 margin is a good way to earn a spot among the state's top teams. St. Thomas Academy has gotten it done with both offense and defense this season, and they'll be tough to slow down in this battle of unbeatens. But don't count out Holy Family Catholic. Senior quarterback Mike Roane can throw when he needs to (he has 546 yards and eight TDs this season) and he can also make plays with his feet (564 yards rushing and four more scores). Slowing down Roane will be the key to St. Thomas Academy's success. PREDICTION: St. Thomas Academy 34, Holy Family Catholic 14

Previous Record: 9-5
