When it comes to the regular season, Liberty stands as the champion after turning a 4-0 week into another Suburban Big Six Conference crown, a district tournament win against Platte County and the No. 45 spot in the POWERADE FAB 50 rankings.

Meanwhile previous No. 1 Francis Howell Central saw its season come to an abrupt end after falling to eighth-seeded St. Charles West in the Class 4 District 8 tournament. So is the fun and fate of the postseason.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. Liberty 23-3 (2)
Bluejays re-emerge as top team after earning its fourth straight Suburban Big Six Conference crown and beating Platte County to open district tournament play.

With about a week remaining in the regular season, games are starting to matter a little bit more with playoff seeding and positioning at stake.

Liberty remains atop the rankings, but the Bluejays might be hoping that they don't encounter Lee's Summit in the postseason. For the second time this season, Liberty lost last week and for the second time this season, it came at the hands of Lee's Summit.

Another matchup to watch is Eureka and Parkway South, who will meet twice on Tuesday and Wednesday in games that will almost certainly impact next week's top 10.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's in parentheses):

1. Liberty 17-2 (1)
Lee's Summit appears to have the Bluejays' number, as the Tigers once again handed Liberty a one-run loss last week. Before that, Class 4's top squad scored 27 combined runs in easy wins against Park Hill and Central.

2. Francis Howell Central (St. Charles) 16-4 (3)
Spartans notched two big wins against Timberland and No. 3 Vianney before falling to Fort Zumwalt West, marking their first loss in seven games. A pivotal match against Howell North looms on Tuesday.

3. Vianney (Kirkwood) 16-5 (2)
Golden Griffins ran win streak to five games before being cooled off by No. 2 Francis Howell Central in an 11-4 loss.

A cluster of games between top 10 teams gave some clarity to the playoff picture while opening the door for a new team to take over the top spot.

The Liberty Blue Jays, led by Nathan Winfrey, have been on a roll and pushed their current win streak to 10 games by sweeping the competition at the Northland Baseball Tournament. Liberty now sits at No. 47 in the latest POWERADE FAB 50 with a chance to avenge their lone loss of the season this week when it plays Lee's Summit.

Vianney returned to its winning ways by defeating previous No. 1 SLUH and previous No. 6 Francis Howell in consecutive contests. This should add even more intrigue to what should be a closely contested Class 4 postseason.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. Liberty 14-1 (2)
Bluejays move into top spot riding 10-game win streak, including last week's triumph at the Northland Baseball Tournament.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 14-4 (4)
Golden Griffins ended two-game slide by beating previous No. 1 SLUH and No. 6 Francis Howell in consecutive close matchups.

3. Francis Howell Central (St. Charles) 14-3 (3)
Spartans have won 10 of last 11, including last week's victory against rival and No. 7 Francis Howell.

Vianney has had a tough slate of games this year, to say the least. Eight of their 15 games have been against teams with winning records, inlcuding Howell North (three times), Howell Central and Lee's Summit West. The will remain tough this week, as the Golden Griffins face No. 1 SLUH on Tuesday and No. 6 Francis Howell on Wednesday.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

Recorded its third straight shutout by beating Warrenton 10-0. Junior Billikens will put eight-game win streak on the line Tuesday against No. 4 Vianney.

2. Liberty 9-1 (4)
Blue Jays have won five in a row and look to find more success in this week's Northland Baseball Tournament.

3. Francis Howell Central (St. Charles) 10-3

Last year, SLUH's 24-0 start ended abruptly in the Class 4 quarterfinals with its first and only loss to eventual champ Francis Howell. This year, with only six seniors graduated, expectations were tempered with the loss of ace Sash Kuebel and the preseason surgery of Mitch Klug.

Apparently, this has all mattered little for the Junior Billikens, who are off to a similar hot start at 8-1 behind the play of pitcher Brian Howard and debut in this week's POWERADE FAB 50 at No. 49.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. SLUH 8-1 (2)
Junior Billikens have overcome injuries and won six straight games.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 10-2 (1)
Golden Griffins saw their 10-game win streak snapped in a loss to Chaminade. Two of their next four games come against ranked opponents (No. 1 SLUH and No. 6 Francis Howell).

3. Francis Howell Central (St. Charles) 9-3 (4)
Spartans will put their five-game win streak on the line against No. 6 Francis Howell on Saturday.

With four of the state's top 10 teams at the Midwest Classic, there was bound to be plenty of movement in this week's rankings. In the end, Vianney emerged as the victory, rallying from a 5-0 deficit to beat Lee's Summit West 7-6 for its second tournament title in three years. Some say these two could meet again come May in the Class 4 championship, so stay tuned.

Just hours before that matchup, Lee's Summit West showed its talent by snapping the 18-game win streak of defending Class 4 champ Francis Howell North.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. Vianney (Kirkwood) 8-1 (5)
Golden Griffins captured the Midwest Classic title by beating Francis Howell North and No. 3 Lee's Summit West on Saturday. Vianney has won eight straight since a season-opening loss to Lindbergh.

2. SLUH 8-1 (3)

3. Lee's Summit West 7-1 (6)

Final POWERADE Missouri final hoops rankings

The Class 1, 2 and 3 tournaments were decided over the weekend and with Charleston hanging on to dethrone defending Class 3 champ Hogan Prep, the Bluejays stood pat in the rankings, along with everyone else. In Class 2, Billings won while Scott County Central pushed their streak to four straight Class 1 state titles.

On the national front, a few upsets allowed two-time defending Class 5 champion McCluer North to move up to No. 33 in the POWERADE FAB 50 rankings.

Here are the final rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 28-1 (1)
Stars ended season on 26-game win streak and repeated as Class 5 champs by beating Nixa.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 27-2 (2)
Golden Griffins had their best season ever but fell short of a title after a Class 5 quarterfinal loss to eventual champ McCluer North.

3. Nixa 30-2 (3)
Thirty-game win streak was snapped in the Class 5 final by McCluer North. With Jalen Norman and Austin Ruder, back, Eagles are the early favorites for next year.

After games on Sunday, March 4.

McCluer North coach Randy Reed told me before the year that, in hopes of focusing on the new goal and season at end, his team was going to act like they never won the Class 5 title in 2011. But as the season wore on, at times it seemed like the rest of the state acted like the Stars weren't the defending champs, either.

After going under the radar for much of the season, the spotlight has returned to the Stars, who have won 24 straight (including a big quarterfinal win against a tough Vianney squad), are ranked No. 38 in the POWERADE FAB 50 and are two wins away from a repeat title.

Also under the radar and just across the Class 5 bracket is Nixa. The Eagles began the season with a loss, but have yet to taste defeat again, winning 29 straight and avenging their lone loss by downing Rock Bridge in the quarterfinals.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 26-1 (1)
Stars defeated Vianney 63-54 behind Jordon Granger's 18 points to earn 24th straight win and spot in the Class 5 final four. The defending champs face Lee's Summit West on March 8.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 27-2 (2)
Golden Griffins saw their best season in school history come to end with a loss to top-ranked McCluer North in the Class 5 quarterfinals.

3. Nixa 29-1 (3)
Led by Jalen Norman's 31 points, the Eagles avenged their lone loss of the year by beating Rock Bridge in overtime to move to Class 5 semifinals. Next up: a Marquette squad they beat by 22 earlier this season.

Missouri Week 12 hoops rankings: McCluer North enters FAB 50

After games on Sunday, Feb. 26

Following several surprising district round developments, the Sweet 16 kicks off for the remaining Class 4 and 5 teams this Wednesday.

McCluer North kept up its winning ways, holding off McCluer in the Class 5, District 8 finals behind Jordon Granger's 25 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks to vault to No. 45 in the POWERADE FAB 50 rankings. The Stars will continue their trek to defend their state title against Fort Zumwalt South on Wednesday. But get this — should the Stars win, it could mean a quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 Vianney, which meets Troy Buchanan on Wednesday.

A similarly huge quarterfinal matchup could take place on the other side of the Class 5 bracket should the seeds hold true. A win for Nixa and Rock Bridge would mean a rematch of their season opener, when Rock Bridge handed Nixa its lone loss of the season.

One Class 5 team to watch out for is CBC. The Cadets knocked off Webster Groves in last week's district final and have played Vianney in each of their three regular-season matchups.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 24-1 (1)
Stars continue to roll, stretching their win streak to 22 games by holding off rival McCluer in the Class 5, District 8 final. The drive to defend their state title begins Wednesday against Fort Zumwalt South.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 26-1 (2)
Golden Griffins took care of business en route to the Class 5, District 5 tournament crown. A first-round win against Troy-Buchanan on Wednesday could mean a huge quarterfinal matchup with top-ranked McCluer North on Saturday.

3. Nixa 27-1 (3)
Eagles breezed through the Class 5, District 11 tournament. They face the Webb City in Wednesday's sectional round and a win could mean a quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 Rock Bridge, the only team to beat Nixa this season.

Missouri Week 11 hoops rankings: District playoffs begin

The district playoffs began this week, making for several rematches and tons of intense play. Most eyes will be on the loaded Class 5, District 8 bracket, which includes No. 1 McCluer North, No. 4 McCluer and an upstart Hazelwood Central team. Defending Class 5 champ McCluer, winners of 20 straight, handled defeated both teams in the regular season but both contests were close, meaning Friday's final could be a memorable one.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 22-1 (1)
Stars enter this week's loaded Class 5, District 8 tournament on 20-game win streak and with second straight Suburban North Conference title.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 24-1 (2)
Golden Griffins begin play in this week's Class 5, District 5 tournament with their first Metro Catholic Conference crown.

3. Nixa 25-1 (3)
Eagles closed out the regular season with their 25th straight win. They will face Kickapoo on Wednesday in the Class 5, District 11 tournament.

Missouri Week 10 hoops rankings: Lee's Summit North makes debut

To say there are some hot teams in Missouri would be an understatement. There's defending Class 5 champ McCluer North, which has (literally) looked unbeatable of late behind an 18-game win streak and Jordon Granger's 13.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

There's also Vianney, which has put together two quality wins against Borgia and DeSmet since having its 18-game win streak snapped, as well as Nixa, which has won 23 straight games since losing its season opener.

And this week, there's Lee's Summit North making its debut in the top 10. The Broncos knocked off previously ranked Rockhurst and could earn another big victory Tuesday when they face Blue Springs South.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 20-1 (1)
Red-hot Stars have now won 18 straight. After six days off, they take on Chaminade and Ritenour this week.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 22-1 (2)
After earning at least a share of the first MCC title with a win against DeSmet, the Golden Griffins take on SLUH on Tuesday and CBC on Friday.

3. Nixa 23-1 (3)
The Eagles, winners of 23 straight, have beaten eight of their last nine opponents by at least 20 points. Next up: Ozark on Tuesday, Webb City on Friday.

After games on Sunday, Feb. 5

With about two weeks of regular-season play, the Missouri high school basketball scene is entering a critical stretch. Momentum is always key entering the playoffs — just ask the New York Giants, or even defending Class 5 champ McCluer North. That's why several key matchups this week could prove critical in March.

McCluer, which moved to the No. 5 spot in this week's rankings, will look to gain some steam when it faces No. 7 Soldan on Friday. The Comets are riding a five-game win streak, but Soldan has been battle-tested of late, downing East St. Louis (Ill.) and CBC, which beat McCluer, before barely losing to a talented Whitney Young (Ill.) squad.

Rock Bridge welcomed back Travis Jorgenson last week after the star junior guard missed a month with a hand injury. But the Bruins lost in Jorgenson's first game back, as Raytown South's Earl Peterson went off for 31 points to send Rock Bridge to its second loss in four games. Whether the Bruins can reestablish their chemistry with Jorgenson and get back on track will be key come playoff time.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 19-1 (1)
Stars pushed win streak to 17 games with big win against Hazelwood Central. Next up: Riverview Gardens on Thursday.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 21-1 (2)
Golden Griffins downed Borgia and Washington on consecutive days. Tough stretch continues with Friday's contest against Nolan Berry and DeSmet.

3. Nixa 20-1 (3)
After blowing out Neosho by 40, the Eagles travel to Carthage on Tuesday.

Missouri Week 8 hoops rankings: McCluer North takes over top spot

After games on Sunday, Jan. 29

As weird as it may sound for a defending state champ, McCluer North has quietly moved back up to state's No. 1 spot. For whatever reason, some had written off the Stars after they fell to Borgia in November, but 16 straight wins later, the Stars appear to be peaking at the right time as they did during last year's title run.

Led by Jordon Granger's 13.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, the Stars have downed rival McCluer and Cardinal Ritter, which knocked off former No. 1 Vianney this past week. Cameron Biedscheid led the way with 26 points while the Lions also got a career-high 22 points from Charles Jones. The loss knocked Vianney out of the POWERADE FAB 50 rankings.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. McCluer North (Florissant) 18-1 (2)
Defending Class 5 champs return to top spot with a 16-game win streak in hand. Big game against Hazelwood Central looms on Thursday.

2. Vianney (Kirkwood) 18-1 (1)
Golden Griffins fell for the first time this season in a 69-66 loss to Cardinal Ritter. Look to bounce back Wednesday against Clayton.

3. Nixa 19-1 (5)
Eagles keep on winning, and in a big way, topping their last five opponents by an average of 24 points.
