Last season marked one of the most hyped and anticipated basketball seasons in New Jersey prep basketball history, as St. Patrick and St. Anthony stood as the nation's top two teams for most of the year.
A film crew followed St. Patrick throughout the intriguing campaign, compiling a documentary called "Prayer for a Perfect Season," which airs tonight at 9 p.m. on HBO. For Celtics fans, the piece should provide a bit of nostalgia, what with pretty much all of the heavy hitters from that team (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Derrick Gordon, Dakari Johnson, Austin Colbert and coach Kevin Boyle) now at college or other high schools.
But the film goes well beyond the basketball season. The piece chronicles the real-life struggles of Kidd-Gilchrist, who lost his uncle on the same day he signed with Kentucky, and Gordon, whose twin brother couldn't attend games because he's in jail. As someone who followed a good deal of St. Pat's season, got to know Kidd-Gilchrist through an in-depth feature and saw some of the producers' work, I'm confident in saying that this is a must-see for all high school basketball fans.
In the meantime, check out this preview focusing on St. Pat's big matchup last season against Winter Park (Fla.) and some player named Austin Rivers.
