Injuries, upsets shake up Week 8 New York football rankings
By By Brandon Parker
At this point in the season, most top teams are hoping to run damage control and ease into the playoffs. Not so for some New York squads.
No. 1 St. Anthony's survived yet another upset bid with a goal-line stand on a two-point conversion, this time stuffing Iona Prep for a 21-20 win. The outcome gives the Friars the top seed and momentum going into this week's CHSFL Class AAA playoffs.
No. 4 Tottenville had the best team on paper in the state – that is, until QB Brandon Barnes went down with a torn ACL during last week's 20-6 win against Susan Wagner. The Pirates will find out how they can fare without Barnes when they face a big test in Campus Magnet this week.
No. 5 Fort Hamilton won in its first game without QB Marvin Centeno, who is out for the year with a shoulder injury, but the Tigers take on No. 7 Lincoln in their next contest.
Meanwhile, Freeport and William Floyd both lost, sending one of out of the top 10.
Without further ado, here are this week's state rankings (last week's rankings are in parentheses):
1. St. Anthony's (Mehlville) 7-0 (1) The Friars escaped another upset bid by stopping Iona Prep's two-point conversion try in a 21-20 win. Next up: Mount St. Michael in the first round of the CHSFL AAA playoffs.
2. Orchard Park 9-0 (2) The Quakers beat Niagara Falls, 49-14. Next up: Jamestown.
3. Aquinas Institute (Rochester) 8-1 (3) Little Irish beat Honoeye Falls-Lima, 21-0. Next up: McQuaid Jesuit.
