Louisville FB players penalized after honoring fallen friend
By David Auguste
Just moments after reeling in a long touchdown that appeared to seal a Week 1 victory for Louisville over Walsh Jesuit, an emotional Alex Schooley raised a finger toward the sky. Teammate Gavin Lovejoy joined him in a gesture intended to honor 16-year-old Dominic Wilgus, their friend who was killed just days earlier in an automobile accident. Schooley was a pallbearer at Wilgus' funeral. The game officials, apparently unaware of the meaning of the tribute and calling the game by the book, assessed an excessive celebration penalty on Louisville. Walsh took advantage of the improved field position and went on to kick a game-winning field goal for a 27-26 victory.
