As the weekend draws closer, two local basketball players are edging closer to the vaunted 2,000-point plateau for their respective careers.

On the eastern side of the state, Boys' Latin senior Maurice Watson is 28 points from the total, standing at 1,972 career points entering the weekend. The 5-foot-9 guard, who has signed with Boston University of America East, dropped 33 points on Comm. Tech Thursday to move within striking distance of the 2K plateau.

Watson could surpass the mark Saturday at against Pennsauken (N.J.). If he falls shy of 28 points for the game, his next contest will be against Southern on Tuesday. Watson will be the sixth player in the history of the Philadelphia City League if he accomplishes the feat; among the other five is NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain.

On the western side of the state, Highlands senior Micah Mason is much closer to the mark. Mason needs just seven points to eclipse the 2,000-point mark. He averages better than 30 points a game, but he scored just 18 against a very good Hampton team on Tuesday. Highlands plays host to Burrell on Saturday.

Mason will play at Drake University next season.
